Craig Auden is ready for the heat of competing at the Commonwealth Games – thanks to a special vest! The Coventry-based shooter has been preparing for the hot and humid conditions with a bit of clothing he picked up on the internet. The vest has a button which allows him to vary the temperature.
With the 1st XI’s midweek game in Bath falling victim to the remnants of the recent wintry weather, and the Thirds not due to play their rescheduled finale until next month, it was left to Penarth Hockey Club’s 2nd XI to uphold honour at the weekend. PENARTH ‘A’ 7-3 Gwent The Seconds hosted Gwent in the final game of their first season in De Cymru & The Marches 2 looking to secure a more than respectable fourth place finish after a poor start to the campaign.

British GT Champion Seb Morris will take on the very best GT endurance racing drivers in the world this season in the Blancpain Endurance Cup, driving a Team Parker Racing Bentley Continental GT3. The 22-year old Wrexham-born driver will spearhead the team’s Pro-Am assault, sharing the car with team-mates Ade Barwick and Derek Pierce. Morris clinched the coveted British GT crown last season, sharing a Bentley with co-driver Rick Parfitt Jnr (son of the famous Status Quo guitarist). Morris has been in the celebrity limelight himself recently, starring in Channel 4’s reality television series Celebs Go Dating. But it’s back to serious motorsport business from now on, as he undertakes his first full European motorsport campaign since he raced in the Formula One-supporting GP3 series in 2015.

Welsh swim queen Jazz Carlin is going will have to beat the Australian ‘Terminator’ if she wants to hold on to her Commonwealth Games 800 metre title on the Gold Coast. Rising Aussie star Ariarne Titmus was only five-years-old when Carlin made her debut at the Games in Melbourne in 2006. The Welsh idol was 15 at the time, while Titmus is shaking up the top end of the swimming word over 800 metres at the age of 17. Nicknamed ‘The Terminator’, she became the first woman in a decade, and only the sixth of all-time, to win the 200, 400 and 800 metre Freestyle treble at the Australian championships to claim her place at her first Games.
Lynn Howells won’t be reconsidering his position as Romanian coach even after the Oaks squeezed into the World Cup finals, but he does want to carry on coaching. Howells and his coaching staff stepped down after nearly seven years in charge, and a 70% success record, in the wake of his side’s 62-12 win over Belgium with one round of the Rugby Europe Championship campaign to go. A first defeat to Spain in his reign, 22-10, meant the Spaniards merely had to beat the Belgians to take the automatic World Cup qualifying place. It seemed a formality and would have left Romania to scrap it out in the play-offs for a back door ticket to Japan next year.
In the second of two articles on WRU governance modernisation, Geraint Powell argues that severing professional rugby from the amateur game would only exacerbate current problems and suggests Welsh rugby requires strong devolved structures. My articles on Welsh rugby governance always trigger a lively response and my one on 8 March (www.dai-sport.com/22056-2/) was no exception. It is fair to say that my observation that governance severing the professional game from the amateur game has become the “holy grail of the intellectually challenged” was not uniformly well received.

First the players who took part in the annual East v West Wales games were rewarded.
Rugby officials in England are to campaign for the tackle area to be lowered after more evidence that injury rates are rising. Three years after George North’s concussion led to changes in the way international rugby is observed by medics, the RFU’s latest injury audit have led to calls for action to halt the rising tide of head injuries. In Wales, no national audit of injuries is undertaken so the evidence collected across the border is considered carefully by World Rugby when they assess the need for law changes.
Ryan Giggs defended Gareth Bale’s contribution after he suffered his first defeat as Wales manager to Uruguay in the China Cup final. Real Madrid star Bale has been the big attraction at this four-team tournament in Nanning with his every move monitored by the media and his Chinese fan base. But Bale was overshadowed by Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani as they inspired Uruguay to a 1-0 win.

Carlos Carvalhal has revealed how managing in Turkey gave him the resilience to cope with a Premier League relegation battle. The Swansea City manager had to deal with jailings, an absent board and no pay during his spell at Besiktas – all of which helps keep his current tasks in some sort of perspective. Carvalhal takes the Swans to Manchester United this weekend, where he will come face-to-face with compatriot Jose Mourinho, who he once studied during a week spent when his fellow Portuguese boss was at Chelsea.

More than 3,000 fans gave Lord a standing ovation an, […]

Gareth Bale will go head-to-head with his rival in Spain Luis Suarez on Monday as Wales take on Uruguay in the China Cup final. Real Madrid star Bale and Barcelona striker Suarez will provide a La Liga flavour to the tournament final, which will be shown live on S4C from 12.15pm, with English commentary available. After a dream start in Ryan Giggs’ first match in charge, former Wales international and S4C studio analyst, Owain Tudur Jones has warned the new manager he faces a far sterner test in his second at the helm.
Justin Tipuric signed off for the Ospreys before heading Down Under to play for Wales Sevens at the Commonwealth Games with a performance that his interim head coach described as “world class”. The Wales and British & Irish Lions back row man was instrumental in the Ospreys beating Leinster for the first time since April, 2014, as he made one try, scored the bonus-point try and carried off the man of the match award in the 32-18 triumph. “I thought Justin was world class. You can see why the sevens have been after him because his touches on the ball, blind passes and energy around the field were simply world class,” said Ospreys interim head coach Allen Clarke.
