Andrew Lord says his Cardiff Devils team are playing for the ‘ultimate prize’ in this season’s end-of-season PredictorBet play-offs. Head coach Lord is preparing Devils for their Elite League quarter-final against Coventry Blaze and says: “Play-off hockey is totally different and we need to be ready for that. “We will be playing for the ultimate […]
Great Britain have named their captaincy team for the World Under-18 Championship fixtures. GB, whose team includes Cardiff Fire’s Lewis Davies, are playing in Division Two group A against hosts Estonia, Australia, Korea, Lithuania and Poland. Sheffield Steelers forward Liam Kirk will captain the team with Jordan Buesa (Solway/Braehead) and Ben Solder (OHA, Canada) assistants. Head coach, […]
March is normally the mournful month for Welsh rugby when the regions reflect on what might have been. Instead, the Scarlets can still prove themselves the best team in Europe, while the Cardiff Blues also have a chance for silverware. Robin Davey says there are encouraging signals for both. One from the west and one from the east as the Scarlets and Cardiff Blues fly the flag for Wales in Europe this Easter weekend. This is where it gets serious as the two competitions reach the knock-out stages, the Scarlets at home against La Rochelle in the senior tournament in what is sure to be a full-blooded quarter-final, while Cardiff Blues travel to Murrayfield to take on high-flying Edinburgh at the same stage in the Challenge Cup competition.
Alfie Mawson will not be affected by his England selection disappointment, according to Swansea City manager Carlos Carvalhal. Mawson will return to action as the Swans resume their Premier League campaign at Manchester United on Saturday, without having won his first cap during the international break. The 24-year-old centre-back – arguably the club’s most consistent performer this season – was among the substitutes for England’s friendlies against both the Netherlands and Italy, but failed to get on the pitch.
Neil Warnock believes leading Cardiff City to promotion this season would be the ‘biggest achievement of his career’. The Yorkshireman has been in coaching and management for almost four decades and has seven promotions on his CV. Warnock wants to secure an eighth before he retires, eclipsing Dave Bassett, Graham Taylor and Jim Smith, who […]
Craig Bellamy’s six shooters are gunning for gold. ‘Bellers’ and his Cardiff City youth team fired six goals in their FAW Youth Cup semi-final victory – and repeated the feat against Sheffield United. The young Bluebirds defeated Airbus Broughton UK in the under-19 cup and now play Swansea City in the final, while they proved […]
The season is coming to a climax for the Scarlets, the Cardiff Blues and the Ospreys with all three having something to aim for. For the Dragons, though, it’s a familiar story of hoping for jam tomorrow, even before the picnic has been packed away. Geraint Powell looks over their campaign and examines where they […]
Welsh athletes took the opportunity to warm up for the Commonwealth Games by competing at the Queensland International Track Classic on Wednesday evening. The event attracted the likes of Jamaica’s Olympic 100m and 200m champion Elaine Thompson and compatriot Yohan Blake, along with English sprint stars Dina Asher-Smith, Adam Gemili and Zharnel Hughes, who ran the fastest 200m on Australian soil since 2001. The Welsh performance of the day went to Osian Jones, who smashed his nation’s hammer record on the way to finishing second in a quality field.
Ken Owens says his side won’t be fazed by La Rochelle’s big reputation, or their even bigger pack, when the French side roll into Llanelli on Good Friday’s shoot-out for a Champions Cup semi-final berth. La Rochelle have never been this far before in the tournament, while the Scarlets are returning to the knock-out stage […]
The Welsh Rugby Union are to hold talks with England, Ireland and Scotland as they seek opponents for their new regional U23 teams. The four new sides – who will fill a new development tier between the Guinness Pro12 teams and the Premiership – will play between 10 and 12 games next season. The WRU are insistent those matches should be meaningful and within a league structure. That will require opposition from outside of Wales and the Union plan wide discussions in a bid to involve age-group opposition from other nations.
Alex Cuthbert has become used to the odd brickbat or two during his seven years in the Cardiff Blues and Wales teams, but his switch to Exeter Chiefs next season might mean a smoother ride in the future. His three-year deal with the English Premiership champions will mean an end to his international career for the moment, because he is 13 caps short of the required 60-cap threshold to be considered from a club outside Wales, but the obvious benefit is working under Rob Baxter. The Chiefs director of rugby has created an environment that has produced more international players in the past four years than possibly any other club and his teams have delivered plenty of silverware as well.
Todd Kelman is resigned to seeing head coach Andrew Lord leave Cardiff Devils in three years and says: “He will go on to bigger things – and deserves that.” Canadian Lord and his team have achieved remarkable success since being appointed Devils player-coach four years ago. They have won back2back Elite League titles, ending a […]
Llanelli Town have taken control at the top of Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One. The Reds won 2-0 against rivals Haverfordwest County at Stebonheath Park and are six points clear at the top. Penybont FC, County and Afan Lido are chasing hard, but there is no doubt that manager Andy Hill and his team […]
The regions have won the battle to get Under 23 teams elevated over the Premiership clubs with the WRU board backing their plan to create a new competition from next season. The Premiership will go from being a development path to a sideshow. With the British & Irish Cup disappearing, largely a casualty of major apathy and poor performances by the regions, and the Anglo-Welsh Cup reduced to second rank status, the Under 23 competition is due to be the latest stepping-stone project.
James Chester has revealed how Wales players were still going strong at 3am every night in China – although it was certainly no party. The Aston Villa defender says the squad prepared for their return to domestic duties with late nights – to counter the time difference – at the China Cup. Ryan Giggs took charge of the national side for the first time in the four-team competition in Nanning during the international break and contended with an eight-hour time difference with the UK.
Craig Auden is ready for the heat of competing at the Commonwealth Games – thanks to a special vest! The Coventry-based shooter has been preparing for the hot and humid conditions with a bit of clothing he picked up on the internet. The vest has a button which allows him to vary the temperature.
With the 1st XI’s midweek game in Bath falling victim to the remnants of the recent wintry weather, and the Thirds not due to play their rescheduled finale until next month, it was left to Penarth Hockey Club’s 2nd XI to uphold honour at the weekend. PENARTH ‘A’ 7-3 Gwent The Seconds hosted Gwent in the final game of their first season in De Cymru & The Marches 2 looking to secure a more than respectable fourth place finish after a poor start to the campaign.
Wales are gunning for success in two major women’s football competitions. Manager Jayne Ludlow and her Welsh senior team are top of their group in the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup and play England away in the next fixture, while the national under-19 squad are through to the elite round of the Uefa Championships. They […]
British GT Champion Seb Morris will take on the very best GT endurance racing drivers in the world this season in the Blancpain Endurance Cup, driving a Team Parker Racing Bentley Continental GT3. The 22-year old Wrexham-born driver will spearhead the team’s Pro-Am assault, sharing the car with team-mates Ade Barwick and Derek Pierce. Morris clinched the coveted British GT crown last season, sharing a Bentley with co-driver Rick Parfitt Jnr (son of the famous Status Quo guitarist). Morris has been in the celebrity limelight himself recently, starring in Channel 4’s reality television series Celebs Go Dating. But it’s back to serious motorsport business from now on, as he undertakes his first full European motorsport campaign since he raced in the Formula One-supporting GP3 series in 2015.
Cardiff Fire netminder Lewis Davies is in the Great Britain for World Under-18 Championship duty. Lewis, from Barry, is in the GB squad for Division Two group A group matches in Tallin, Estonia. The six-team tournament involves Estonia, along with Australia, Korea, Lithuania and Poland and runs from Sunday, April 1 to Saturday, April 7. […]
