“Twitchy” Elinor Barker Switches Into Gold Mode For Wales

Elinor Barker upgraded from silver in Glasgow four years ago to win Wales’ second gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. The 23-year-old Cardiff cyclist confirmed her status as the Queen of the Track as she added the Commonwealth Games 25km Points Race title to the world crown she took last year. It also means she has completed a clean-sweep of gold medals at major championships. Having helped the British Team Pursuit team break the world record in taking the gold medal in Rio in 2016, last year she became a senior World champion in the Points Race in Hong Kong and also took Madison gold at the European Championships in Berlin.

Move Over Jack Kelsey, Dai Davies, Neville Southall . . . Laura O’Sullivan Joins The Welsh Goalkeeping Legends

Take a bow, Laura O’Sullivan. The Welsh goalkeeper gave an inspired performance to help her side turn the much vaunted England’s Lionesses into cuddly pussy cats in a vital World Cup qualifier. It is impossible to stress just how big the 0-0 draw secured by Jayne Ludlow’s team was in the development of women’s football in Wales. It was the first time Wales had taken a point off England and the first time the home side had failed to win a pool game in qualification.

Wales’ Georgia Davies Through To Final. . . But Tough Test To Come

Georgia Davies is through to the Commonwealth Games 100 metre backstroke final, but she faces a massive challenge to get among the medals once again after seeing the Games record broken twice in the heats. Davies, who struck gold in the 50 metre backstroke in Glasgow, was the silver medallist in the event in 2014, but could only manage third place in the fourth and final heat. Having seen Australia’s 2010 and 2014 champion Emily Seebohm crack her own Games record with 58:91 sec to win the third heat, Davies was then drawn with the world record holder from Canada, Kylie Masse. Seebohm’s time obviously served as a red rag to Masse, who threw down the gauntlet to her biggest rival for gold with another brilliant swim to lower the record even further to 58:70 sec – 0.6 sec off her world record.

Ford Boss Praises Evans On A Remarkable Job

Ford World Rally Team boss Malcolm Wilson has praised new Welsh rally duo Elfyn Evans and Phil Mills on a “remarkable job” after finishing day one of the Tour de Corse in sixth place – despite very little time to prepare for the event together. With Evans’ regular co-driver Daniel Barritt still recuperating from their high-speed Rally Mexico shunt, Mills was drafted into the team as super rally sub. He’s long since hung up his race suit and crash helmet – in fact, today was the first competitive WRC stage the 2003 World Champion had contested in anger for eight years. And it’s one of the toughest events for a driver and co-driver partnership too, as the rollercoaster Tarmac twister is also known as ‘The Rally of 10,000 Corners’. Yet with virtually no time to prepare, the 54-year old Newtown-based co-driver was immediately into his stride – calling every corner with split-second accuracy and guiding Evans to a remarkable sixth position. And full credit to Evans too, for adapting to the situation and driving the EcoBoost-powered Ford Fiesta WRC with speed and precision.

David Morgan Proves Winning Is A Family Business . . . Even If It’s For The Aussies

There will be secret cheering going on in Llantwit Major when the Men’s 200m butterfly gets underway at the Commonwealth Games. There is no Welsh representative in the race for a medal, but one of the Vale of Glamorgan’s own will be challenging not just for a place on the podium, but for the gold. You have to go back to the golden achievements of four-time Olympic diver Rob Morgan for the last time Llantwit produced a Commonwealth champion, but all that could change in the next few days.

Sophie Ingle Insists Wales Have Closed The Gap On England As Showdown Looms

Sophie Ingle insists Wales will prove they have closed the gap on England in Friday night’s FIFA World Cup qualifier. The Wales women’s captain is one of five survivors from the team that lost 4-0 to the old enemy at Cardiff City Stadium in 2014. Eni Aluko was one of the scorers that night – a fact that illustrates how much water has flowed under the bridge since that night, when England were still managed by Welshman Mark Sampson.
