Gethin Jenkins will dip his toe into the coaching pool next month when the Ospreys face the Scarlets in the Celtic Cup – the new shadow tournament for the Guinness Pro 14 designed primarily for under 23 players. The Cardiff Blues prop – Wales’ most capped player – will be the defence coach for the Blues’ youngsters. It’s a first venture into coaching for the Lions forward, who will be 38 in November, but still remains committed to at least one more season as a Blues player.

The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) have joined forces to create a new development competition – The Celtic Cup – for the emerging professional players from the four Irish provinces and four Welsh regions. The competition which features development squads from Connacht, Leinster, Munster, Ulster, Blues, Dragons, Scarlets and the Ospreys aims to provide a learning environment for players, coaches and referees by re-creating the week to week challenges presented by senior professional rugby.

Former Swansea City stalwart Angel Rangel has joined Queens Park Rangers after being let go from the Liberty Stadium at the end of last season. The Spanish defender, who spent 11 years with the Swans, has signed for their Championship rivals on a short five-month contract. Angel, 35, made 374 appearances for Swansea before he was released just before the arrival of manager Graham Potter earlier in the summer.

The Dragons’ bid to share Sean Edwards with the Ospreys this season has collapsed due to a lack of cash. The Wales defence coach – who is leaving to take over at Wigan after next year’s World Cup – has confirmed he will be working with the Swansea region on a consultancy basis. Back in May, Wales coach Warren Gatland announced that Edwards would be working with both regions on a part-time basis, following a brief spell with the Cardiff Blues last season.

Wales beat England 26-20, and by the convincing margin of four tries to two, in their latest outing in the Aon Under 18 International Festival in South Africa. If it was a tactically mature performance, the lopsided penalty count probably made life far harder than it might have been for Chris Horsman’s talented young side. There is no doubting his exceptional speed and ability, but Elfyn Evans knows that he needs to pull a good result out of the bag on this weekend’s Rally Germany. The 29-year old recorded his maiden World Rally Championship stage win in Germany in 2014 and went on to finish fourth overall, so history suggests that a rewarding weekend could be on the horizon. But with only one WRC podium finish to shout about so far in 2018, Evans is currently eighth in the drivers’ standings.
