North Wales crew Matt Edwards/Darren Garrod made it three wins out of three to extend their lead in the Prestone MSA British Rally Championship to 39 points, after winning the John Mulholland Motors Ulster Rally. The Llandudno driver mastered the mixed conditions in his Swift Group M-Sport Ford Fiesta R5 to win the 100-stage mile event by 26.6 seconds. Josh Moffett/Andy Hayes finished second in their Fiesta R5, with David Bogie/John Rowan third in a ŠKODA Fabia R5. Rhys Yates had led the event and was battling for victory when he made a mistake on SS9, and the time lost saw him and Aberdare co-driver James Morgan drop to fourth in their Fabia R5. Alex Laffey, together with Aberystwyth co-driver Patrick Walsh, survived a number of spins to complete the top five in their Fiesta R5.

The South Wales Warriors face their biggest game in seven years this weekend when they host the Portsmouth Dreadnoughts in the British American Football league’s Southern Conference semi-final. The undefeated Warriors received a bye in the first round of the British American Football Association (BAFA) Division Two play-offs after the Worcestershire Black Knights forfeited ahead of their trip to Llanharan. That means Sunday’s game (2.30pm) at the Warriors’ home at Llanharan Rugby Club’s Dairy Field is their first post season action since they lifted the Division Two Britbowl championship, as a wildcard, in 2011.

Elfyn Evans is enjoying a fantastic high-speed and faultless run so far on Rally Germany, completing the first full day of action in fourth position in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC. Having finished last night’s short opening superspecial in 20th place, Evans and co-driver Dan Barritt made rapid progress up the leaderboard over today’s six vineyard stages. Ninth after SS2, sixth after SS3 and fourth after SS5, the Dolgellau driver has been on sensational form. In a close fight for position, Evans finished Friday’s stages just 10.4 seconds behind FIA World Rally Championship leader Thierry Neuville (Hyundai), one second ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala (Toyota) and 37.8 seconds off the overall Rally Germany leader Ott Tänak (Toyota).

Elfyn Evans has started this weekend’s Rally Germany by setting equal sixth fastest time over the Shakedown stage and successfully completing the opening St Wendel superspecial test in his Ford Fiesta WRC. Co-driven by Dan Barritt, this is an important FIA World Championship event for the Dolgellau driver, as he aims to improve on his current eighth place in the drivers’ standings. He completed the opening stage tonight tied on time with Citroën driver Mads Østberg, 3.2 seconds behind leader Ott Tänak (Toyota).
Ospreys coach Allen Clarke has revealed it was Alun Wyn Jones’ own call to stand down as the region’s captain. Justin Tipuric will skipper the team this season after Wales lock Jones opted to give up the armband he has carried for eight years since taking over from Ryan Jones. Jones – who will concentrate his leadership duties on captaining Wales into a World Cup season – has held the post since August 2010, making a record 115 appearances as captain, more than double the number of any other Ospreys captain.

The tributes have poured in for Rhondda Outlaws RLFC chairman Clive Batchelor who died suddenly on Monday 13th August 2018 aged 53. Batchelor helped to establish the open age side at the Outlaws two years ago after they were originally founded as a junior club.
