Josh Adams has revealed he has yet to decide whether to return to Wales in order to continue his international career.
The Worcester Warriors wing was a breakthrough performer for his country last season, making his debut against Scotland in the Six Nations and then holding onto his place for the clash against England.
He then won two further caps on tour in the summer victories over Argentina and was a tryscorer in the 30-12 second Test win over the Pumas.
But those four caps put Adams a long way short of the 60-cap threshold to continue playing for Wales from outside of the country, meaning he will have a big decision to make at the end of the forthcoming season when his current contract expires.
“The rule is obvious, everyone knows it and everybody asks me about it,” said Adams in an interview with the Worcester News.
“It’s clear to see I am on four caps so it is impossible (to get to 60) when there are only 10 international fixtures in a season.
“Obviously as I am at a young age with international rugby (aspirations) it is going to have to come into consideration.
“But the focus is now on starting the year playing really well at Worcester because if I am not I won’t be selected.”
Adams moved to Worcester and the English Premiership in 2015 after failing to make the breakthrough he wanted at the Scarlets.
His pace and elusive running was an immediate success and he has scored a hugely impressive 30 tries in 48 matches for a club normally scrapping for victories to avoid relegation.
He finished last season as the league’s joint top tryscorer, with 13 tries, alongside Christian Wade of Wasps and Vereniki Goneva of Newcastle.
He has been linked to all four of the Welsh regions, but Adams’ loyalty to the English club who gave him his opportunity is clear and the Warriors are likely to push the boat out with a lucrative new contract offer.
He added: I was a young Welsh lad and there wasn’t really any opportunities for me in Wales,” Adams said.
“I was let go by Scarlets and other teams had their back three players.
“To get the opportunity to come over to Worcester, experience something new by living away from home having to fend for myself and manage my money was massive for me.
“Without Worcester and playing in the Premiership every week then I would not have four international caps and would never have finished joint-top try scorer.
“It will be an incredibly hard decision but that’s something I am going to talk over with a few people and when that time comes it will come.
“But for now my head is solely on playing well for the start of the year as it is important we start well.”
On when he expected to have his future resolved, Adams replied: “It’s not something where I can give you a month or a day.
“When things happen they happen so it will be later down the line — that’s all I am saying.”
