Judge Gatland Is In Session . . . Let The Trials Begin

Ken Owens believes it will be trial by television when the Scarlets go to the Liberty Stadium for the second of the Welsh festive derbies on Saturday. The trial in this sense is one for Warren Gatland’s national selection with the Scarlets hooker suggesting Wales places could be won and lost depending on performances between the old rivals. Owens’ side may have won their last 10 derbies, including their last visit to the Ospreys, but this game has a far more open feel to it than in recent years. And given the announcement earlier in the week that Stephen Jones will be joining Wayne Pivac in the new Welsh coaching team next year, it will have an extra edge.

Gareth Anscombe Nails It . . . Good Kick, Poor Game

Gareth Anscombe admitted the Cardiff Blues made hard work of their derby victory over 14-man Dragons in a game that the Wales fly-half will not be re-visiting in his dotage. Anscombe kicked a late penalty to deny the gritty visitors a draw at the Arms Park and earn a 19-16 victory, but neither team were capable of rising above the distinctly ordinary in demanding blustery conditions. The Dragons will be pleased with their resolve, but angered their temperament undermined their efforts after Neil Fairbrother was sent off after only half an hour for a flying elbow at a ruck.

The Principality Premiership . . . Messed Up, Mangled And Mulitated, But Still Providing Festive Spice

The Boxing Day derbies at Guinness Pro14 level may have gone – dispersed elsewhere for the benefit of TV – so why not get your December 26th fix by heading towards Aberavon v Neath? It’s always a feisty derby and one of a number of local dust-ups that Geraint Powell says have plenty of spice despite the constant tinkering with the division. The Principality Premiership, the modern and official incarnation of the old unofficial Western Mail Championship, has a terrible time of it as a commercial offering, not helped by it being identity-diluted in some critical South Wales consumer markets. The various factions and cliques that comprise the decision makers in Welsh regional, semi-professional club and grassroots club rugby seemingly never able to agree on the role, funding, composition and format of this semi-professional division from one season to the next, but the division is certainly getting fascinating as we head into the festive period this year.

Swans Linked With Danish Striker But Graham Potter Says January Deals Can Be Dodgy

Swansea City have been linked with a move for Middlesbrough’s Danish international striker Martin Braithwaite, although Graham Potter has downplayed suggestions there will be much trade coming into the Liberty Stadium next month. Braithwaite – who played for the Danes in their 2-1 victory over Wales last month – has not scored for Boro since August and has been in and out of the team this season under manager Tony Pulis. The former Toulouse forward went out on loan to Bordeaux last season, but cost Boro a hefty £9m 18 months ago and any move to the Swans is likely to be a loan also.

Aaron Wainwright Insists Coachless Dragons Are No Headless Turkeys As Derby Days Begin

Dragons flanker Aaron Wainwright believes the underdogs can find their bite when they face rivals Cardiff Blues at the Arms Park on Friday night. The back row forward – on the fringes of the Wales team despite the handicap of having to perform every week in a mostly losing line-up – insists the sacking of Bernard Jackman can be a catalyst for improvement at Rodney Parade. The Dragons lost again last week – their third defeat in a row where they have shipped over 45 points – but there were some signs for optimism, says Wainwright in their 49-24 reverse at Clermont Auvergne in the European Challenge Cup.

Hockey Star Tom Wood And A Christmas Blesssing Story To Warm The Heart

Cardiff and Met Hockey Club’s Tom Wood will count his blessings this Christmas after recovering from an extremely rare brain condition.  A blocked artery put his life in danger, but it was his high fitness levels that saved him . . . as Cari Morris reports. Having narrowly missed out on the selection for the Wales hockey team that competed at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games earlier this year, 20-year-old Tom Wood suddenly found his disappointment brought into sharp perspective when he suffered a life-threatening health issue.
