Rising Cardiff star Ben Thomas has paid tribute to Gethin Jenkins after picking up the Best Newcomer title at the Principality Premiership awards. The 20-year-old has come under the direction of Jenkins at the Arms Park, following the move of the former Wales prop into coaching under Cardiff head coach Steve Law. Thomas – who plays at both outside-half and inside centre – said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this season. We’ve had a strong run and Steve Law has been massive for us, both in his recruitment and throughout the season.

Swansea City fans have been told to adopt the brace position – they are about to get hit by the Birch. New Swans chairman Trevor Birch has warned that tough times lay ahead for a club already reeling from the departure of manager Graham Potter to Brighton. In language that includes some of the most terrifying of modern-day business jargon, supporters have been told that the current squad – already pruned back to the roots with 16 players discarded in the past year – has to be further “rebalanced”.
Joss Labadie has been declared fit for Newport County’s play-off final against Tranmere Rovers at Wembley on Saturday. The influential midfielder limped off during County’s semi-final second leg win at Mansfield and was considered a doubt for the tie that could propel the club into League One. But manager Michael Flynn has insisted his former skipper – who missed 10 games before the play-offs through an ankle injury – is available.
Kieffer Moore is one of seven new faces called up by Ryan Giggs for Wales’ training squad ahead of next month’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Croatia and Hungary. Barnsley striker Moore – who was born in Torquay but who has a grandmother from Llanrug, near Caernarfon – joins several other unfamiliar names at the Algarve training camp from May 22-28, but injured pair Aaron Ramsey and Ethan Ampadu both miss out. Juventus-bound Ramsey has not played since April 18, when he suffered the hamstring injury which prematurely ended his Arsenal career and sees him miss the Gunners’ Europa League final date with Chelsea.
Seb Morris remains third in the British GT Championship drivers’ standings, despite missing out on what could have been two podium race results at Snetterton yesterday. Wrexham-born driver Morris and JRM team-mate Rick Parfitt Jnr were on course to secure their second podium of the campaign in round three on Sunday morning. Having worked their way up from 10th on the grid, contact on the final lap of the 60-minute race resulted in damage to the No.31 Bentley and a slip to fifth on the drag to the line. Round four later in the day proved even more vexing for the 23-year old when an unfortunate spin for Parfitt Jnr, while pushing for the podium, led to heavy contact with the barriers. Although he rejoined the race, an unrelated late left rear puncture dropped the duo out of the top ten.
Graham Potter has insisted he will remember Swansea City fans for the rest of his life after ending his spell in charge after less than a year to take over at Brighton. The 44-year-old – who once said he would remain at the Swans, “for however long they want me to stay” – was confirmed as the Seagulls’ new manager on Monday afternoon. The Swans had offered Potter a new contract in an attempt to ward off interest from the Premier League club, who sacked Chris Hughton following the end of the season.

Cardiff Met will be playing European football for the first time next season, following their Welsh Premier League play-off victory over Bala Town. The students were held to a 1-1 draw after extra time before winning 3-1 on penalties at Maes Tegid. But Matthew Burgess says it was a match where the prize will be recalled long after the game itself. Rarely do finals make good spectacles and the 2018/19 Welsh Premier League season came to its conclusion without exception yesterday evening as the most valuable game in the domestic calendar was settled by a penalty-shoot in favour of Cardiff Met. Not that Christian Edwards or any of his staff, players or travelling supporters will care, of course. The game itself will matter little in the weeks and months to come as the club look forward to making their European debut later this summer.
