The beast is back – and he’s supporting the Bluebirds in their quest for Championship success. Jon Parkin sat a few rows behind me in the away section at Pride Park, chatting with Cardiff City fans, posing for photographs and, most importantly of all, singing club songs. He was among more than 1,500 members of […]
The 52nd edition of the Welsh Road Relay Championships will take place at Pembrey Country Park on Sunday. Athletes will be hoping for kinder weather conditions than they experienced 12 months ago when heavy rain battered the picturesque coastal park. Swansea Harriers dominated on that occasion taking both senior race victories. Clubs will compete for places at the ERRA National Autumn Relays with automatic entry no longer guaranteed for Welsh clubs. This is likely to make the senior races more competitive as clubs look to guarantee their spots for the national showcase in Sutton Park three weeks later.
Connah’s Quay made light work of Aberystwyth Town on Friday night as they kicked off the sixth round of the JD Cymru Premier. The Nomads moved up into second spot overnight and Andy Morrison will be delighted to have seen his side wrap up their third victory in six days, with a thumping 4-1 win. Morrison reshuffled his pack for the visit of Aber with John Disney, Declan Poole, and Michael Bakare coming into the starting line-up.
The Scarlets have given their Welsh international trio of Rob Evans, Samson Lee and Steff Evans a chance to get over the disappointment of not being picked for the World Cup by starting them against the Dragons at Rodney Parade this weekend (Saturday, 4.00pm). They have all been back in full training with their regional team mates this week and have earned fulsome praise from new head coach Brad Mooar ahead of his final warm-up match before the Guinness PRO14 opener against Connacht at Parc y Scarlets on 28 September. “Their engagement, their connection with the team and their desire to be involved has been outstanding. They’ve been fully involved and couldn’t have done any more,” said Mooar.
Robert Glatzel has earned the praise of his manager Neil Warnock after scoring his first goal for Cardiff City. The German striker – a £5.5million summer signing from Bundesliga 2 side Heidenheim – equalised from the penalty sport as the Bluebirds drew 1-1 at Derby County. The result moved Cardiff up to 12th in the Championship table, but they continue to look like a team pedalling hard without really travelling a great distance.
Aaron Shingler could be pressed into emergency second row duty from the bench in Wales’ World Cup opener against Georgia in 10 days’ time as Adam Beard and Cory Hill are both in danger of missing out. Beard is set to join Wales’ World Cup squad in Japan early next week after having his appendix removed. And Beard’s squad colleague Hill is continuing to recover from a stress fracture in his leg, with the second pool fixture against Australia on September 29 having been his stated initial target.
There is a solid Latvian influence for ice hockey in South Wales after Cardiff Fire signed Kristians Kasjavanos for 2019-20. The teenager has committed to Fire, who play their first National League South One fixture of the season at Romford Raiders on Saturday. Kasjavanos joins Cardiff Devils’ young forward Toms Rutkiss, a promising offensive player […]
There is good news for captain Joey and captain Jake as Cardiff Devils prepare to start their domestic season with back-to-back fixtures at their Viola Arena home venue this weekend. Newly-appointed captain Joey Martin is closing in on a playing return following a minor muscle injury, while immediate past captain Jake Morissette will be back […]
Boxer Kristian Touze has a reputation for donating to good causes, but insists there will be no charity shown to rival Angelo Dragone when the pair fight for the Welsh super-featherweight title. Their eagerly awaited clash will top the bill at Swansea’s LC2 tonight (September 13) as part of a Welsh title double-header that features Morgan Jones taking on Jake Anthony for the vacant super-middleweight belt. The bill, which also showcases some of the best emerging talent in Wales, will be shown live on S4C.
Wales have landed in Japan and for Warren Gatland the final chapter of his time in charge of the national team is about to begin with his third and final World Cup at the helm. It could be a thriller that runs to seven spectacular matches and a climax in Yokohama City. Or short drama played out in just four. Time will tell. George W. Bush was the U.S. President, the Beijing Olympics were months away and Lehman Brothers was still solvent when Gatland unveiled his debut coaching selection for Wales in the 2008 Six Nations against England.
Steve Cooper has dedicated his August EFL Championship manager of the month award to the Swansea City fans who have cheered his team to the top of the table. Cooper has won the first award of the campaign in his first competitive month as a club manager. During that time the former England U17 head coach has guided the unbeaten Swans to five victories and one draw in their opening six league fixtures.
No, it hasn’t slipped into the sea from its picturesque location above the rocks at Ty Croes, but instead Anglesey Circuit will play host to its biggest ever Plop Enduro event on Saturday – otherwise known as scooter racing! Plop refers to the popular small Honda C90 mopeds, which have gone from being just cheap commuter machines to racing ‘bikes for young aspiring Barry Sheenes. These ‘bikes are comparatively inexpensive and parts are plentiful – and quite remarkably these humble machines can be converted into a respectable race ‘bike, reaching respectable speeds.
As Cardiff City visit Derby County tonight, seeking the points that would lift them into the top six of the Championship, Dai Sport’s Terry Phillips recalls the 11 years he spent working for the Derby Evening Telegraph ahead of his own return to the club at Pride Park. Colin Addison, Roy McFarland, Johnny Newman, Arthur Cox and […]
Wales Women will welcome Italy, France and Scotland to Cardiff Arms Park in this season’s Women’s Six Nations. All of Wales’ fixtures will be broadcast live on TV or online by either BBC Wales or S4C with the home matches to be shown on television. Wales – who had their best Six Nations tournament in a decade last season with two wins and a draw – open their campaign against Italy on Sunday 2 February (1pm).
The World Cup starts next week and after another Grand Slam season optimism is in the air across the nation. But, wait . . . here’s our brooding columnist Robin Davey – the Prince of Pessimism – to find plenty of dark clouds on the horizon. Wales have landed in Japan – where they have a date with their World Cup destiny – amid real concerns, not to say grave doubts, about how they will perform. For they were beaten in three of their four World Cup warm-up matches, once fairly comfortably by England at Twickenham before conceding the double at the hands of Ireland.
Boxing and religion recently went head-to-head in the ring in Wales with the case of Sikh fighter Aaron Singh making the news. But a rule that undermined Welsh boxing’s aim for an inclusive sport had been troubling them for some time, writes Owen Morgan. The Welsh Amateur Boxing Association (WABA) has an ambition to become one of the most proactive, progressive and successful sporting governing bodies, not only in Wales, but across the world. The board was in the news earlier this summer when Sikh boxer Aaron Singh called for the rule forcing amateur boxers in Wales to fight clean shaven to be scrapped.
When James Davies took a blow to the head playing against England, he thought the brother he calls “Golden Balls” had turned him over again. Big bro Jonathan – three years older (28 to 31), 70 more caps for Wales (five to 75) and a double Lions tourist (no caps v six) – has always made sure James lives in his shadow. Who knows? You wouldn’t be surprised if you heard that Jonathan had been upgraded to first class on the squad’s flight out to Tokyo last night, while James had been relegated from business class to cattle.
Wales will have to scale the man-mountain that is Georgian hero Mamuka Gorgodze when they start their World Cup bid. The Georgians have brought back their talismanic 6ft 5 in, 19st forward for a fourth World Cup, who revels in the nickname, Gorgodzilla. The Toulon and former Montpellier star – who can play at lock, flanker or No.8 – won the last of his 71 caps against Romania in March, 2017, but has answered a plea for help from head coach Milton Haig after a plague of injuries in the Georgian camp.
The New Saints have moved top of the Cymru Premier League after surviving a late onslaught against Newtown to win 2-1 on Tuesday night. Joe Kenton sparked a late surge of pressure from Newtown, but Saints stubbornly held onto their lead as they bounced back from their weekend’s Scottish Challenge Cup defeat. The New Saints – without injured trio Simon Spender, Blaine Hudson and Jamie Mullan – led midway through the first period when Ryan Brobbel fired home a free-kick.
