Tomas Francis has revealed Wales are going to go back to basics to solve their scrum problems at the World Cup. The Exeter Chiefs tight-head prop has been part of a Wales pack that creaked and wobbled at times during their warm-up matches for the tournament. Francis was at the forefront of a much-needed improved display when Wales lost to Ireland in Dublin, but all 20 teams at the World Cup in Japan will operate under a World Rugby scrummaging law amendment that was implemented this summer.
Junior and youth sailors from all round Wales will meet in Mumbles for the British Youth Sailing Welsh Regional Championships. A year out from the Tokyo Olympics where Cardiff’s Hannah Mills will be looking to defend her gold medal, this is the event which will find and showcase the Welsh sailing superstars of the future.
Wales Golf has welcomed the announcement that the 2021 AIG Women’s British Open will be held in Royal Porthcawl, as a further boost for the game in Wales. With the focus on women’s golf following a thrilling Solheim Cup, it is an opportunity to build further on the work Wales Golf does in encouraging women and girls into the game, which has seen an increase in the numbers joining Welsh golf clubs.

Andrew Lord and his Devils opened the 2019-20 domestic season with back-to-back wins and 10 goals. Canadian Mike McNamee and Finnish forward Matias Sointu were both key figures for Devils during 5-3 wins against Guildford Flames (Cup) and Glasgow Clan (League). McNamee was man of the match against Flames, while Sointu has proved an effective […]
Gerwyn Price retained the International Darts Open in Riesa, Germany, with a gutsy response to beat Rob Cross, 8-6, in the final. Having collected his first European Tour title at the Sachsenarena 12 months ago defeating Simon Whitlock, the Welshman known as ‘The Iceman’ repeated his exploits on Sunday evening, claiming the crown for the second time and the £25,000 prize. Cross, who was looking for his maiden Euro Tour victory, settled into the final well with a 12-dart break in the third leg, only to be answered by an 87 bullseye finish from Price to level at 2-2.
Cardiff AC sealed a senior race double at the 52nd Welsh Road Relay Championships on Sunday. The event returned to Pembrey Country Park near Llanelli, hosting a trial trace for the ERRA National Road Relays for the first time, and with competitors enjoying far better weather conditions than when torrential rain blighted the races 12 months ago. The Cardiff men’s team took the lead at the end of the second leg courtesy of British 50km record holder Dan Nash. Jake Smith increased the lead on the penultimate leg, recording the fastest time over the 5.6km course in 16:48.

Matt Grimes insists he will “take one for the team” and risk yellow or red cards in future in order to keep points on the board for Swansea City. The Swans captain says he will gamble on the punishments by committing a foul if he is in the position to deny opponents late on in a match. Grimes has claimed he should have pulled back Nottingham Forest striker Lewis Grabban at the weekend in the build-up to Forest’s 85th minute only goal of the game at the Liberty Stadium.
Warren Gatland insists Wales are ready to unleash some World Cup surprises and has claimed he was holding the team back in the tournament warm-ups. Despite winning the Grand Slam earlier this year, and reaching the top of the global rankings, Wales come into the tournament now ranked fifth in the world after heavy defeats to England and Ireland during the build-up. But Gatland says the team were experimenting in those matches and that their true strategy will only come to the fore when they begin their campaign against Georgia on Sept. 23.
Cardiff Devils 5, Glasgow Clan 3 Cardiff Devils have opened their domestic ice hockey season with five-goal performances against Guildford Flames and Glasgow Clan. By Paul Evans Tom Cave may have lost out on his British Rally Championship title fight with defending, and now back-to-back champion, Matt Edwards, but the Aberdyfi ace certainly went down fighting by winning the Galloway Hills Rally in style. Cave delivered a perfect performance on the Scottish gravel event by setting the fastest time […]

A solitary goal from Kayne McLaggon sent Barry Town to the top of the Cymru Premier table yesterday, after they saw off newly promoted Airbus, 1-0, at the Airfield. McLaggon fired Barry ahead in the 10th minute and that proved to be enough for Gavin Chesterfield’s side to remain unbeaten and move top, two points ahead of The New Saints who face Cardiff Met at Cyncoed on Monday night. Newtown left it late to end a three-game winless run as George Harry broke the deadlock in the 84th minute to hand the Robins a valuable three points with a 1-0 victory at home to Bala Town.
Sam Warburton predicts northern power can ignite the Rugby World Cup – and an Englishman called Curry could be the hottest player at the tournament. The British and Irish Lions captain from two years ago reckons the players who helped him share that series with the All Blacks can now topple the world champions in Japan. Wales, England, Ireland and even France are all capable of lifting the trophy, says the former Wales skipper – ending the 16-year dominance of New Zealand and South Africa.
Steve Cooper has admitted the flair factor went missing at Swansea City as he suffered his first defeat as manager. The Swans remain top of the Championship, but their previously unblemished record now has a figure in the loss column after Nottingham Forest deservedly won 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium. Cooper’s side had won six successive games in all competitions and scored 19 goals in thrilling fashion in doing so going into the game, but did an impressive job of disguising the fact.
Lucy Gossage – the queen of Tenby – insists there is nowhere quite like the Pembrokeshire town that hosts Ironman Wales. When the consultant oncologist from Nottingham decided to spend more time on her medical career and less on being one of the world’s top long distance triathletes, it was feared she would not be around to defend her crown this autumn. Instead, the lure of Ironman Wales 2019 today (Sunday) – highlights of which will be shown on S4C on Friday, September 20 at 8.00pm – proved too hard to resist.
Matt Edwards has retained his British Rally Championship crown, beating rival Tom Cave to the title after a controlled drive on the Galloway Hills Rally. Co-driven by Patrick Walsh, Edwards came into the title showdown only needing a seventh-place finish or better to become the first double champion in almost a decade. Packing his Pirelli-supported Ford Fiesta R5 with a raft of spares, the M-Sport star cautiously set off into the eight stage event just looking for a trouble-free finish. Meanwhile Cave and co-driver Dale Bowen had to win the event to bring themselves back into title contention. They set fastest time on all eight stages in their Michelin-shod Hyundai i20 R5 to win the battle in Scotland, but Edwards won the war – threading his way through the gravel tests to bring his Fiesta home third overall, which was more than enough to seal back-to-back titles.
Merthyr Town aim to extend their 100 per cent home record when they play Chesham United at The MetCoaches Stadium this afternoon (Saturday).
