Russ Thompson and Matthew Hirst go into the final round of the Pirelli Motorsport UK Welsh Forest Rally Championship in a head-to-head showdown on this Saturday’s Winner Garage Skoda Wyedean Stages Rally. With three wins (two coming on the last two rounds) Thompson and co-driver Andy Murphy lead the series, while Hirst and his navigator Declan Dear are third. Even though Tom Llewellin (Ford Escort Mk2) is second, the points to drop rule means that he cannot win the overall title, leaving it instead to the two Mitsubishi Evo 9 drivers to battle it out for the top award. Despite this, it’s been a fantastic season for Llewellin, as the Pembrokeshire teenager has already clinched the RAVENOL Welsh Challenge for drivers’ and Two-Wheel Drive titles.

The Scarlets’ home fixture against London Irish will be live on free-to-air TV as part of a deal reached by S4C to show live coverage of the Welsh regions’ matches in the European Rugby Challenge Cup this season. With three of the regions in this season’s competition, supporters will be able to watch one live match per round during the group stages, after an agreement was made with rights-holders BT Sport and European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR). The first two fixtures have been confirmed. Round one will see the Scarlets’ home match against Pool Two opponents London Irish being broadcast live on S4C, on Saturday 16 November. The second match to be televised will be the Pool Five clash between Cardiff Blues and Leicester Tigers on Saturday 23 November.

Nowhere does Wales’ sporting claim to punch above its weight appear more justified than in Para Athletics. A total of seven Welsh athletes will be wearing Great Britain colours in Dubai when the World Para Athletics Championships starts in Dubai on Thursday. Owen Morgan spoke to one of them. Three reigning world champions boasting 15 global gold medals between them will lead a seven-strong contingent of Welsh athletes at this month’s World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai. Aled Davies, Hollie Arnold and Olivia Breen will be joined in the Great Britain team by WPA European Champions Sabrina Fortune and Harri Jenkins, along with Disability Sport Wales Para Academy athletes Kyron Duke and Jordan Howe.

Ryan Giggs is willing to gamble on the fitness of both Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey in order to clinch Wales’ Euro 2020 qualification. The Wales manager has named both of his two world class talents in the squad for the decisive remaining qualifiers away to Azerbaijan on November 16 and at home to Hungary three days later – even though he admits there are doubts about the readiness of both. Giggs has admitted that Ramsey in not “100 per cent match fit” and that Bale is “a worry” – although he insists both players could still feature in Wales’ biggest games for three years.

Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale have both been included in the Wales squad for the country’s final tilt at Euro 2020 qualification – despite persistent doubts over the pair’s fitness. Juventus midfielder Ramsey has been named by manager Ryan Giggs in the group for matches against Azerbaijan and Hungary after recovering from a thigh problem. Ramsey, who is yet to feature in Wales’ qualifying campaign because of injury, has made two substitute appearances for Juventus in the past week.

Michael Flynn says Newport County’s 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Salford City “should be a harsh lesson”. Charlotte Arter is reaping the rewards of her decision to take a break from her day job to concentrate full-time on her athletics career. Last autumn, the Wales and Great Britain international decided to take a one year break from her post as a performance sport officer at Cardiff University. Since then, the 28-year-old has broken two long-standing Welsh distance records, set a new world parkrun best time, enjoyed huge cross country success and been named Welsh Athletics’ female endurance athlete of the year.

Steve Cooper insists his Swansea City team are reaping the reward for their resilient spirit away from home as they moved back into the top two in the Championship.
