Devils Lord Fed Up Over League Video Review Problem

Cardiff Devils powered to victory against Dundee Stars in Scotland, but head coach Andrew Lord was left frustrated when a ‘goal’ scored by his team was missed.

Devils were 3-1 ahead in the second when they found the net, but now video review was available.

“We scored to make it 4-1 and nobody saw it,” said Lord. “Goal-line technology was down, which keeps happening around the league.

“The standard of play in Elite League is far too good for that to happen. This is not a knock on Dundee in any way at all. 

“I am a guy who cares deeply about Elite League. I have been here seven years. Goal-line technology has to work.

“Things happen in the blink of an eye and we must help referees.

“We need to make the product better around our league. Every professional league has goal-line technology, the Champions League have it. Ut has to happen and has to work all the time.”

Matthew Myers, Stephen Dixon, Sean McMonagle and Joey Haddad scored for Devils, who were hauled back to 3-2 ahead at one stage before Haddad netted their fourth goal on a powerplay.

Stars are battling to end a run of poor form – one win in their last nine games – but Devils worked hard to earn their win.

Man of the match Ben Bowns faced 31 shots and conceded only two goals. Sam Jardine was back on the blue line after completing his two-game suspension, while Matt Pope was rested.

Devils are at home against Sheffield Steelers next Saturday (Viola Arena, 7pm) in a match which looks certain to be a sell-out. Lord’s men then travel to Guildford Flames on Sunday (6pm) and Glasgow Clan the following Wednesday (7.30pm).

“Overall, we need a most consistent 120 minutes next weekend without doubt,” says Lord. “Consistency is always the key.

“In the first period against Dundee we played exactly the way we need to. We started a little slowly in the second, but got back at it and defended well in the third.

“Dundee played hard. They are a smaller, fast team, but they stuck in there with us.”

Nottingham Panthers secured their place in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals thanks to a 3-1 win in Manchester and they finish second in Group C.

The loss does not mean that the Storm are out of the cup completely – but they’ll need to get past Coventry in a one-game ‘Play-In’ to go further.

One last eight clash has already been set with Dundee, who finished top of group A, choosing to play Glasgow Clan over two legs.

The other teams in the quarter-finals will be Cardiff Devils, Guildford Flames, Belfast Giants, Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham plus Coventry or Manchester.

That line-up could result in a Devils v Giants clash over two games because other teams have the right to select their opponents and seem unlikely to go for either of those two.
