Guildford Flames 3, Cardiff Devils 1 Andrew Lord is walking a desperately difficult line. Some fans want violent, physical ice hockey, while he knows the modern style for successful teams is to be fast, skilful and decisive. The old days of two heavyweights throwing off their gloves and fighting have just about gone. Devils must […]
Harri Jenkins marked his first ever World Para Athletics Championships by winning a brilliant bronze medal in Dubai on Sunday night in the T33 100m final. The Neath speedster clocked a time of 18.98 to finish third behind fellow Great Britain athlete Andrew Small who pipped him to the silver medal. For Jenkins, the reigning European champion, it was a breakthrough performance on the global stage. The gold went to Ahmad Almutairi, of Kuwait.
As the World Cup reviews, inquests and best XVs begin to fade in the rear view memory, Harri Morgan has an idea for the road ahead. Make the tournament more competitive by changing the rules of eligibility. It works for others, he says. For us fans, the joys and disappointments of Rugby World Cup Japan 2019 can now be shoved neatly into the library of sporting memories. Okay, perhaps Springbok fans can milk it for a while longer.
Aled Davies described his fourth consecutive World Championships shot put gold medal as his most difficult yet and immediately paid tribute to his fiancée and newborn daughter for inspiring him to victory. Davies had to fight every step of the way to retain his title as Luxembourg’s Tom Habscheid threw a personal best of 15.10m to lead the Welshman going into the fourth round at the World Para-Athletics Championships in Dubai. But the Cardiff AC athlete, who has been struggling for form this season and went into the competition ranked third, dug deep to produce the F63 competition-winning distance of 15.38m with his fourth attempt and never looked back.
Ashley Williams’ influence on Bristol City was hailed as a major factor in their 1-0 victory at Cardiff City. The Wales captain – whose career had stalled just a few months ago after leaving Everton for an unsuccessful period on loan with Stoke City – was pinpointed by his manager Lee Johnson as a key influence in the ending of the Bluebirds’ unbeaten home record in the Championship.
Kyron Duke became the second Welsh athlete to claim a medal at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai – but admitted he was hoping to strike gold. The day after Olivia Breen won long jump bronze, Duke followed suit by finishing third in the F41 shot put competition. Having won silver at the London championships in 2017, Duke went into Sunday’s competition as the current world record holder having set the new mark of 14.19m in Germany earlier this season.
Wayne Lloyd added the Torques Builth Stages to his growing list of rally victories, after winning the event in his Ford Escort Mk2. Co-driven by Will Lloyd, the Radnorshire driver won the 35 stage mile event, held at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd, by just two seconds. This year’s Herefordshire Motor Club-organised single-venue mixed-surface rally was evenly split between asphalt and gravel roads, with the last two stages run in the dark.
Cardiff Devils 4, Sheffield Steelers 3 Hats off to Gleason Fournier. The man from Rimouski, Quebec deserved to hit treble top, but hat-trick hopes were dashed when his third ‘goal’ touched Stephen Dixon’s on the way in. “Gleason scoring our first was huge for the game and him personally,” said head coach Andrew Lord. “ […]

Elinor Barker was part of the Great Britain team that celebrated UCI Track World Cup gold in the women’s team pursuit as they build towards the Tokyo Olympics. Wales’ Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion Barker joined Katie Archibald, Ellie Dickinson and Neah Evans in beating Germany in the final to take gold in an impressive time of four minutes 12.244 seconds in Glasgow on Friday night. Barker’s team recorded a time more than a second and a half quicker than that which brought European success in Holland recently.
With former footballer Aaron Wainwright and ex-basketball regular Tomos Williams excelling for Wales at the Rugby World Cup, multi-skilling is all the rage. Owen Morgan speaks to Welsh Athletics’ Fyn Corcoran about the benefits of being Jack or Jill of all trades. Fyn Corcoran wants to give Welsh children the opportunity to run, jump and throw from an early age – and carry those skills through life. Welsh Athletics’ new National Talent Development Coordinator for jumps and combined events doesn’t just want to develop the next generation of heptathletes, like world champion Katarina Johnson Thompson, or decathletes such as Wales’ own three-time Commonwealth Games competitor Ben Gregory.
Blade Thomson will make his first Scarlets appearance of the season as Brad Mooar’s side face Benetton in Llanelli on Saturday night. Thomson was one of Scotland’s better players at the World Cup and he will start at No 8 with Ed Kennedy and Josh Macleod either side of him in the back-row. Elsewhere in the pack, Taylor Davies comes in for Marc Jones at hooker. Davies packs down in a front row that includes Phil Price and Wales international Samson Lee. Lewis Rawlins and Steve Cummins again get the nod in the second row.
Neil Warnock has claimed Swansea City fans celebrated their derby victory over Cardiff as if “they had won the World Cup.” The Bluebirds manager made the observation as he was stressing the importance of Sunday’s Severnside derby at home to Bristol City. The clash will be Cardiff’s second contest against near neighbours in three matches and Warnock is desperate for his own fans to enjoy some bragging rights after their tepid performance in the 1-0 defeat to the Swans at the Liberty Stadium.
He may be small in stature, but Nathan Dyer is proving a big influence on Swansea City’s youngsters – according to manager Steve Cooper. Dyer played four matches at the start of the season but then wasn’t seen again until the recent derby victory over Cardiff City. But having overcome injury problems and medical complications that affected the birth of his daughter, the winger has added his familiar attributes of guile and workrate to the Championship promotion-chasers.
Welsh Athletics has named strong men’s and women’s teams for the Bobby Rea International Cross Country event in Northern Ireland this weekend. There is a large Cardiff Athletics contingent across the two teams with no less than seven athletes from the capital city club named for the event at Billy Neill MBE Country Park, Dundonald on Saturday. There is also a transatlantic flavour to the team with two of the athletes taking part recently having returned from studying and competing in the United States.
The car parking space at the Welsh Rugby Union’s training centre has a new name plate. Warren Gatland has gone and Wayne Pivac’s initials are now inscribed. It’s not the only thing that will change, according to Robin Davey, as he looks ahead to this month’s fixture between Wales and the Barbarians. The king is dead, long live the king. Warren Gatland has proved the most successful and one of the most popular coaches Wales has ever had. But all good appointments come to an end and a new era is about to begin.
