Having challenged for the lead on both his previous appearances, Jason Pritchard is hoping that it will be third time lucky when he goes for victory on the Roger Albert Clark Rally later this month. The 31-year old Builth Wells driver retired from both the 2013 and 2017 events – the first time when he crashed whilst fighting for the lead and the second time when a broken half shaft stopped Pritchard in his tracks when he held a comfortable advantage at the top of the time sheets. He has waited two years for another crack at one of the longest events in British rallying, and is naturally leaving nothing to chance in his meticulous preparations.

Wales’ Olympic bronze medalist Laura Deas will lead the British challenge for more skeleton success this season after being named in the World Cup team. Deas tasted Olympic glory in 2018 and now has her sights set on similar achievements on the sport’s top circuit in 2019 and 2020. Madelaine Smith and Kim Murray join Deas in the women’s World Cup team having both competed at this level last time out, finishing the campaign ranked 11th and 18th in the world respectively.
Shaun Edwards has claimed Wales almost blew their World Cup quarter-final against France – the team that are now his new employers. The former Wales defence coach has admitted Wales’ game plan in their quarter-final in Japan – where they sneaked past France, 20-19, before losing to South Africa in the semi-final – failed to pan out as he and Warren Gatland had hoped. Edwards – who has joined new France coach Fabien Galthie in the same role he occupied alongside Gatland for 12 years – said France made “great progress” at the World Cup.
Harry Wilson will take on the burden of Wales’ Euro qualification hopes with the confidence that comes from a Jurgen Klopp thumbs up. Wilson says the Liverpool manager has played a big part in his impressive Bournemouth form by boosting his belief with text messages. The Wales forward is on a season-long loan from Liverpool and scored his fourth goal for the Cherries at Newcastle last weekend.
There will be no Welsh interest in the 19.com Northern Ireland Open as the tournament enters the last-32 stage. Only three of the 11 home-based players made it into round two in Belfast – and each was comfortably defeated. Jak Jones’ hopes of going deep into the tournament were clinically dashed by veteran Anthony Hamilton.
Ben Davies believes any bust-ups in the Wales camp would be resolved with a handshake and blow over within a day. As Wales prepare for their vital two final Euro 2020 qualifiers, the England squad are still having their behaviour publically dissected with the fall-out from the altercation between Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez. “I think sometimes these things happen in football,” Davies said, referring to the Sterling-Gomez bust-up earlier this week.
Pontypool have been waiting 36 years to become the Cup Kings of Welsh rugby, but they can move within two games of wearing that crown again after the draw for the last eight of the competition. Pooler will be looking to repeat their heroics of two seasons ago when they beat Carmarthen Quins on home soil when the two teams meet again in the quarter-finals of the Specsavers National Cup. The Gwent club last reached the Cup Final back in 1991 and have to go back to 1983 for their only Cup triumph. Unbeaten to date this season, they will provide any team that travels to Pontypool Park a torrid time, but they will have to handle the Quins’ driving maul if they are to go through to the semis.
Wayne Pivac is mulling over selection for his first game as Wales coach, against the Barbarians at the end of the month. The World Cup wounded might dampen the optimism of some, but not Robin Davey, who sees a silver lining around dark clouds. Go for it – that has to be the early message for Wales’ new head coach Wayne Pivac as he prepares for his first game in charge, post-Warren Gatland, against the Barbarians on November 30. Far from being downcast at the double whammy loss of Jonathan Davies and Rhys Patchell – not just for the Baa Baas game, but for the entire Six Nations – Wales and Pivac should be optimistic.
Australia Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne has re-signed as Glamorgan’s overseas player for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The Australian, who will be available for all three formats, excelled in Cardiff last season, scoring 1,114 County Championship runs in 18 innings at an average of 65 and also claimed 19 wickets with his leg-spin. The 25-year-old struck five centuries, including a career-best 182 against Sussex, and hit a pair of tons against Worcestershire – making him the first Glamorgan player to achieve the feat since 2005.
Jayne Ludlow insists Wales have taken another step – rather than a stumble – towards making the UEFA Women’s Euro 2021 finals after their goalless draw in Northern Ireland. The stalemate in Belfast leaves Wales four points behind leaders Norway after being held to a draw for the second time in the group by the Northern Irish, who drew 2-2 in Newport earlier in the campaign. Manager Ludlow’s side welcome Norway on April 14, four days after facing the Faroe Islands, and then have to travel to the highly-rated Norwegians for their last game after hosting Belarus.
It is left to a trio of Welshmen to fly the flag in Belfast after all six of their remaining compatriots crashed out of the 19.com Northern Ireland Open. With Matthew Stevens, Jak Jones and Jackson Page safely negotiating their passage into round two on Monday, hopes were high for the half dozen in the bottom section of the first-round draw. But Lee Walker, Duane Jones, Jamie Clarke, Dominic Dale, Daniel Wells and Michael White all failed to make it through to the last-64 stage at the Waterfront Hall.
Welsh Wizards, the Cardiff-based Premier Squash League team, have a player through to the PSA Men’s World Championship quarter-finals in Doha, Qatar. Bristol-based Marwan ElShorbagy, who has played for Wizards over the last two seasons, will go head-to-head with his brother, Mohamed, on Thursday. But there was no joy for Welshman Joel Makin, who was […]
Matt Hirst and Declan Dear won the 2019 Pirelli Motorsport UK Welsh Forest Rally Championship in style by taking outright victory on the final round of the series, the Winner Garage Wyedean Stages Rally. Russ Thompson and Andy Murphy led the Championship going into the Forest of Dean finale, only needing a solid finish to clinch the title. But when they retired with mechanical problems on the opening stage, that gave Hirst and Dear an opportunity to steal the title in their similar Mitsubishi Evo 9. It would be no easy task for Hirst, as the 2018 Welsh Junior Champion still needed an outright win to steal the crown.

Canadian Morisonn, 6ft 4ins tall, is a mobile, stay-at-home D-man, who doesn’t shy away from physical play. Devils Head Coach Andrew Lord spoke about bringing in Morrisonn: “This is a hugely exciting signing, not only […]

Ffion Tynon has been selected for Wales at senior women’s golf for the time after making the team to compete at the South American Amateur Championships in Chile in January. The highly promising 16-year-old has been included in the Welsh line-up for the open team event after a string of impressive performances at recent tournaments. Tynon finished seventh at this summer’s English Girls Open Amateur Championship – an event for U18s – tasted victory at the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and earned third place at the Welsh Ladies Amateur Championship.
Cardiff City are seeking a new manager, the 10th who will have managed the club in some form or other over the past 10 years. But the legacy and impact of Neil Warnock is one that stands alone in a turbulent decade, says Josh Thomas. The Sevenside Derby is almost up and Bristol City are attacking towards the Canton Stand. The ball is slipped through to Kasey Palmer but Leandro Bacuna comes across to clear the danger and send the ball upfield in search for a Cardiff City equaliser. Moments later the final whistle blows and The Robins secure their first away win over the Bluebirds in 17 years. Loud boos are heard from all parts of the stadium, some fans sit down, dejected, while others stand up hurling abuse towards the players and, in particular, manager Neil Warnock.
Hollie Arnold celebrated her fourth consecutive World Para Athletics title on Monday, but instantly turned her attention to re-claiming her world record at next year’s Paralympics in Tokyo. The Loughborough-based athlete set a new personal best on her way to the F46 title in Dubai, but fell short of regaining the world record she broke to claim gold for Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, last year. Having pouched her fourth world title, Arnold’s focus is now on Paralympic gold and the world record she lost to New Zealand’s Holly Robinson in April.
Jackson Page claimed the biggest win of his professional career to progress to the second round of the 19.com Northern Ireland Open. The Ebbw Vale teenager looked to be heading out of the second of four Home Nations events when he trailed veteran Barry Pinches 3-1 in their best-of-seven encounter on Monday night. But breaks of 81 and 71 either side of a scrappy sixth frame booked the 18-year-old’s place in the last 64 – where last weekend’s Champion of Champions winner Neil Robertson potentially lies in wait.
