Newport County have signed midfielder Dale Gorman from League Two rivals Leyton Orient on loan until the end of the season. The 23-year-old has played 17 matches for Orient this season, but has not figured since their 4-2 defeat to Forest Green Rovers in November. A Northern Ireland international at U21 level, Gorman began his league career with Stevenage in May 2015 after leaving hometown club, Letterkenny Rovers.
Jurgen Klopp may have a point about fixture congestion, but you wonder what the Liverpool manager might have made of the arrangements back in the Fifties. Looking down the record of matches between Cardiff City and Swansea Town, as they were then, their two clashes in Division Two in 1951 leap out of the record books. Why? Because they were played on consecutive days. Not only that, the first game was played at the Vetch Field on Christmas Day and the return was at Ninian Park on Boxing Day.
Welsh swimming will plunge into 2020 with two familiar faces leading the way, but reasons for optimism that results and performances in 2019 suggest new names are on the near horizon as Graham Thomas reports. Georgia Davies and Alys Thomas may be defying age as well as the traditional perceptions of swimmers, but there are plenty of rising Welsh stars following in their slipstream. The recent Welsh Winter National Short Course Championships proved the point with a host of eye-catching performances from the next generation.
Liam Williams look set to rejoin the Scarlets within weeks – rather than next season – as Saracens bid to bring their financial house in order. The Wales and Lions star already seems to have played his last game for the English champions and will spend the next month trying to get fit for the Six Nations, before pulling on his old Scarlets shirt once more. Sarries are loath to pick the 28-year-old again as he has not played for them so far this season. If it stays that way then he will not be included in salary calculations, which would mean they have £230,000 extra head room. To work with.
Steve Cooper has revealed his new signing Rhian Brewster turned down a number of other clubs before joining Swansea City. The Swans manager – who could now give Brewster a debut at Cardiff City on Sunday – said he had been waiting all season to try and complete a loan deal for the 19-year-old Liverpool striker, who worked with Cooper at England U17 level. Brewster is highly regarded at Anfield but has found first-team opportunities hard to come by as Liverpool’s established attackers continue to shine.
Wayne Pivac is considering turning to Sale Sharks prop Willgriff John in a bid to strengthen Wales’ scrum. The 26-year old former Wales under 20s tight-head has been targeted and his form checked by the Wales coach ahead of the Six Nations. John took an unconventional route to the English Premiership, having featured for Northland in New Zealand and Doncaster in the Championship after being released by Cardiff Blues.
Triathlon has often been viewed as the sport for the super fit, rather than those striving to get some exercise into their lives. But Welsh Triathlon are involved in a scheme to give complete novices a chance to “try Tri” as Graham Thomas reports. Many people vow to look ahead to a Dry January this month, but how about a Tri January? Triathlon Wales is involved in a UK-wide campaign to give people a gentle introduction to the sport during a month when some sort of self-appraisal – perhaps after too many mince pies – has become a traditional post-festive routine.
Wales will put extensive security measures in place, amid rising tension in the Persian Gulf, when they play the United States in a March friendly. Contracts are about to be swapped between the Football Association of Wales and US Soccer for a March 30 friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium. It will be the first time that a major US national sports side will have visited the United Kingdom since Iranian general Qassem Soleimani was killed by an American air strike last week.
Cardiff Devils 6, Fife Flyers 4 Andrew Lord’s Cardiff Devils are hanging on in there. They are are playing well below their best right now, but head coach Lord’s men are still right in the hunt for honours. At times against Fife Flyers I was mentally comparing Devils work on defence against Cardiff City’s disastrous […]
Cardiff City 0, Coventry City 1 French striker Max Biamou earned the Sky Blues of Coventry a Professional Under-23 Development League away win at Cardiff International Sports Stadium. The 29-year-old, who has made more than 50 first team appearances for Coventry, took his development league goals tally to eight for the season. Biamou’s winner came […]
The first Wales international matches of the new decade are fast approaching, with Wayne Pivac’s opening Six Nations game against Italy on February 1. But can the next 10 years come close to the decade just gone? And how good was it when placed in historical perspective? Rob Cole sifts through the stats. The past decade has seen Wales notch many famous rugby wins, and reach the top of the World Rugby rankings for the first time, but just how good were Warren Gatland’s teams between 2010-2019? The recently departed head coach led Wales to Grand Slams and Triple Crowns in 2012 and 2019 and to two World Cup semi-finals.
Steve Cooper has gone in hard on his Swansea City players with the kind of determination and sense of purpose they were wholly lacking in their abject FA Cup display at QPR. Cooper may have hedged his bets with an under-strength line-up for their third round tie a week before the club’s Championship showdown at Cardiff City, but he clearly expected a lot more than the pacifist’s performance put up in their 5-1 defeat. Cooper, who was in charge of a team for the first time in the FA Cup, made one of the most damning accusations that a manager can make of his players – that they didn’t even care.
Andrew Lord will demand ‘energy and fire’ from his players when they when they play Fife Flyers at home on Sunday evening. Head coach Lord and his team have suffered highly damaging defeats against Coventry Blaze (0-5) and Manchester Storm (1-4) and badly need a big performance when Flyers arrive ing South Wales. “I expected […]
Dean Ryan reckons the Dragons have unearthed a new “superstar” in wing Rio Dyer after their derby victory over the Ospreys. Adam Warren’s late try sealed a remarkable 25-18 Guinness PRO14 win at Rodney Parade, but was Dyer – a youngster first thrust forward as an 18-year-old by former coach Bernard Jackman – who caught the eye. Head coach Ryan saw his team led 10-8 at half-time after prop Leon Brown responded to a try by his Wales team-mate George North.
Rhian Brewster has been urged by his former Liverpool teammate Yan Dhanda to come and make an impact at Swansea City. Brewster is considering a loan move from Anfield for the second half of the season, with the Swans heading a queue of clubs who would like to sign the 19-year-old striker. Dhanda – who moved from Liverpool to the Liberty Stadium 18 months ago – is still a close friend of his former youth level teammate as well as Liverpool and England star Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Multi-talented Welsh runner Kris Jones should be nicknamed Santa Claus because he certainly delivers the goods at Christmas. Jones’ New Year’s Eve victory in the Nos Galan 5k race in Mountain Ash followed up his win in the Glynneath 5 mile race on Boxing Day. The Swansea Harrier’s 2019 double is the third time in a row he has completed the feat of winning both South Wales festive running events.
Neil Harris admitted he felt relief that Cardiff City are still in the FA Cup but he knows there is huge room for improvement as he looks to rebuild within the January transfer window. The Bluebirds drew 2-2 at home to League Two Carlisle to earn a third round replay that is likely to fall just days after their derby clash at home to Swansea City on January 12. Just 5,828 fans watched the tie – only 1,000 above the lowest recorded attendance at Cardiff City Stadium – and although Harris’s side avoided defeat after being 2-0 down, they have now won only once in their last seven matches.
Aldershot Town, who play Wrexham away in a Vanarama National League match this afternoon, have paid tribute to former Cardiff City defender Chris Barker, who died on New Year’s Day. A statement by ‘Shots chairman Shahid Azeem said: “Aldershot Town are deeply shocked and saddened at the passing of our former defender and caretaker-manager Chris […]

Manager Gavin Williams has had a busy start to the new decade with three players leaving the club, while defender Ismail Yakubu has extended his loan. Merthyr Town drew 2-2 at Swindon Supermarine in their opening match of […]
Jay Harris’s spectacular form in the ring during 2019 has won him a world title shot in America next month. The Swansea boxer will face Julio Cesar Martinez for the WBC flyweight title in Frisco, Texas on February 29. Martinez won the belt in December with a ninth round stoppage win over Cristofer Rosales in Phoenix, Arizona, after former champion Charlie Edwards vacated the title.
