Four Men, Four Women, And Some Familiar Skills . . . Say Hello To Korfball

The South Wales football derby between Cardiff and Swansea wasn’t the only local sporting skirmish taking place in Leckwith at the weekend. Little more than a long throw away from the Cardiff City Stadium, two of Wales’ top korfball teams – Cardiff City & Met and Cardiff Raptors – were doing battle at the House of Sport, as Owen Morgan reports. Not familiar with korfball? Don’t worry, you’re probably not alone. But what the sport currently lacks in familiarity in this country, it certainly makes up for in action and entertainment. Saturday afternoon’s derby match at the House of Sport was played with all the enthusiasm, passion and rivalry displayed across the road the following day at the Cardiff City Stadium . . . and it had goals!

Wales Told: Louis Rees-Zammit . . . He’s Ready, Goddamnit!

Louis Rees-Zammit has been backed to sprinkle the stardust of youth on the Six Nations if – as expected – he is named in Wayne Pivac’s Wales squad on Wednesday. Rees-Zammit has been the talk of English club rugby this season and the 18-year-old was provoking more debate over the weekend as he scored one try and set up another for Gloucester as they beat Montpellier, 29-6, in the Heineken Champions Cup. Pivac has already been to see Rees-Zammit for himself and may well be inclined to move quickly and name him in his first squad as Eddie Jones has reportedly approached Rees-Zammit about wearing the red rose of England, instead.

Neil Harris Axes Neil Etheridge As Steve Cooper Finds Positives In The Long Grass At Cardiff

Neil Harris admitted he faces a goalkeeping dilemma this month after axing Neil Etheridge for the derby clash with Swansea City. With Etheridge continuing to be linked with a move to West Ham, Harris opted to give Alex Smithies his chance and suggested one of his three keepers will be leaving the club during the transfer window. Smithies had few saves to make in a derby that petered out after the interval with both sides suggesting they had done enough to win.

Will Vaulks Aiming For Fresh Start For Cardiff . . . To Boost Wales Bid This Summer

Will Vaulks is hoping to put six months of frustration behind him today by helping Cardiff City achieve derby day revenge. The Wales midfielder is desperate to be part of the Bluebirds’ line-up for the second South Wales dust-up of the season against Swansea City at the Cardiff City Stadium. Swansea beat Cardiff 1-0 in the reverse fixture at the Liberty Stadium in October last year, and despite the fixture being 108 years old there is still history to be made.

Time For The Ospreys To Fire A Shot In Anger At Sarries

Fancy the Ospreys to actually win a game when they cost Saracens in the European Champions Cup on Saturday afternoon? No? Well, you’re probably not alone. But Peter Jackson has a reminder that history often shapes the most unpredictable outcomes. Saracens will look at the dishevelled state of their next European opponent and suspect that the usual New Year ambush awaits them in bandit country. No Champions Cup mission to Ospreys would be the same without one, at least not for the holders.

Alun Wyn Jones. . . Captain, Leader, Legend . . . And Back From Telling His Bosses Exactly How It Is

As the Ospreys prepare for their ultimate test on Saturday – a clash against mighty Saracens in the European Champions Cup, Harri Morgan has been imagining his own tough examination and the only man in Wales who might be up to the task . . . the returning Alun Wyn Jones. Complete this sentence – Alun Wyn Jones is a great leader because…. As I racked Brain:\Rugby\Wales\2006-Present for the top answer, I realised that there was one game that would certainly be the Ospreys lock’s go to response should he be faced with a competency based interview (unlikely) and the inevitable ‘give us an example of a time you have shown strong leadership?’ question.
