Morgan Whittaker has admitted he wasn’t surprised to be racially abused on Instagram – he was actually expecting it. The Swansea City striker became the fourth player from the Championship club to be racially abused this season via social media, and it came during the official Football League blackout. Having scored a vital goal in the win over relegation threatened Derby County last weekend, his former club, Whittaker said he was “buzzing”. Then came the horrible realisation that his goal had sparked a terrible reaction.
Rob Page plans to pick the brains of Chris Coleman before Wales begin another Euro finals adventure. Caretaker manager Page intends to sound out Coleman for advice, having already drafted in one of the former manager’s assistants, Kit Symons to the cause. Five years ago, Coleman led Wales all the way to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 and Page – who was last month confirmed in charge in the absence of Ryan Giggs – wants to glean the inside track on how Wales can make a similar impact at this year’s delayed tournament.
Warren Gatland believes he has picked a British & Irish Lions squad that can go to South Africa and beat the world champion Springboks this summer. The former Wales head coach will complete a clean-sweep of southern hemisphere tours as the head coach of the Lions when he follows on from his success in winning the series in Australia in 2013 and drawing in New Zealand four years ago with the trip to South Africa. Gatland today named a 37-man touring party for the Castle Lager Series and once again his first pick was a Welsh captain for the third successive tour.
“Pick your own” is normally about fruit and veg, but when it’s Lions year it means something more taxing on the brain than the back. Lions squads have been picked across Britain and Ireland for months, but the one that matters – Warren Gatland’s – will be named at 12.30pm today. Harri Morgan has picked his, but like rugby itself, it’s the taking part that counts. The middle pages were always easiest to access. The slightly overgrown nails that you were otherwise ridiculed for, making it easier to temporarily lift the staples that bound the lined A5 pages together. Lift out a couple of sheets, grab the ruler and commence marking out a football pitch. Corner markings an unexplainable must.
Lauren Price will make her second ring appearance of 2021 at the Grand Prix event in Ústí nad Labem in the Czech Republic (5 – 8 May) The 26-year-old has not boxed since winning silver at Hungary’s Bocskai tournament in February, where she was making her return after a 16-month absence.

Wales supporters watched on in excitement over the weekend as Harry Wilson and Gareth Bale both registered hat-tricks for their respective clubs at a crucial time, with EURO 2020 set to commence next month. The two players are integral for Robert Page’s side and both look certain to be central to Wales’ ambitions this summer – possibly paired up front together – so, to see them in such devastating goalscoring form must have been heartening for the stand-in manager. Bale dons the armband and offers a unique, world-class x-factor in the final third, whereas Wilson’s invention and craft is also hugely important.
Wales centre Willis Halaholo has found himself at the centre of yet another racism storm. Halaholo, who helped Wayne Pivac’s side win the 2021 Six Nations, qualified for Wales on residency after three years with Cardiff Blues. When he was first selected by his adopted country in November 2019, the Auckland-born centre was targeted for criticism on social media from bigots who believed a Welsh-born player should have been picked instead – even though he had fulfilled all the requirements.
Dai Sport was a double winner at the recent Wales Media Awards 2020. The website was named Blog of The Year while our reporter and columnist Fraser Watson was the winner of the Sports Journalist of the Year Award. Damian Cole gave his ex-works Get Connected / TCL backed Škoda Fabia R5 an impressive rally debut at the weekend, when he finished second overall on the Corinium Stages at Down Ampney. Covid-19 restrictions mean that rallying still isn’t permitted in Wales, so the Abergavenny ace was one of several drivers who popped over the border to Gloucestershire for the single venue asphalt event – which saw 68 cars take the start.
It was a difficult Six Nations campaign for Wales Women. Three straight defeats, 125 points conceded, and vociferous discontent from outside the camp about the apparent apathy towards them from the WRU. And yet, positives emerged. Some collectively, and the others in the form of individuals.
Pieter Scholtz is being lined up for a move from the Scarlets to Wasps next season. The giant South African prop is considering a move across the border following an impressive first season in Welsh rugby. With the Scarlets having signed Wales squad member WillGriff John from Sale Sharks for next season, Scholtz, 27, was considering a number of English and French clubs, but has opted for Coventry-based Wasps.
Connah’s Quay and The New Saints are looking to return to winning ways this evening as the JD Cymru Premier title race stops off in south Wales. The two title challengers make respective journeys to Barry Town and Penybont in the knowledge there is no margin for error, with only three games of the season […]
Thierry Henry insists sport’s social media boycott must be only “the start” of action against online abuse as South Wales Police continue their investigations into more racism directed at a Swansea City player. The boycott – which started at 3pm on Friday and ran until 11.59pm on Monday – saw a coalition of football’s largest governing bodies and organisations, including the Football Association, Premier League and EFL, among those to go silent on social media in a show of solidarity against online abuse. European governing body UEFA also joined in, as well as Scottish and Irish football, England Rugby, Scottish Rugby, British Cycling, the Rugby Football League, British Horseracing, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Lawn Tennis Association, International Tennis Federation and others.
Morgan Whittaker insists he meant no disrespect to Derby County when he celebrated his first league goal for Swansea City. The Swans striker – who was allowed to leave Derby for a cut-price £700,000 in February – put a finger in each ear as if to block out the noise when he hit the equaliser in his side’s 2-1 win at the weekend. It was a goal that has helped push his former club and their manager Wayne Rooney to the brink or relegation from the Championship .
Cricket is back. Two years since Welsh league cricket was last here, clubs up and down the country have returned to their grounds for competitive action. On Saturday, Newport – South Wales Premier League champions in 2019 – hosted Mumbles and Owen Morgan was there to see it. The sun was shining, senior league cricket was back and all seemed well with the world in Newport on Saturday afternoon. Even the first cuckoo I’ve heard this year joined in to complete the idyllic scene at Spytty Park, which was being replicated at cricket grounds around the country.
Geraint Thomas said his victory in the Tour de Romandie on Sunday reminded him of his Tour de France success as he claimed his first win since that historic triumph in 2018. The Ineos Grenadiers rider overcame the blunder that saw his crash in sight of a stage win on Saturday to take the Yellow Jersey on the time trail in Switzerland.
Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy claims Harry Wilson could be gracing Liverpool’s team next season after the forward’s first senior hat-trick clinched a 4-0 win over Birmingham at St. Andrew’s. The on-loan Anfield forward scored twice in the first half before starting the move for substitute Mark Harris to score the third prior to grabbing the fourth to seal the Bluebirds’ biggest away win in 10 and a half years. Two of the 24-year-old’s goals were superbly-struck free-kicks while his first was hit from 22 yards with the outside of his left foot.
Remi Adebiyi and Lauren Cooper produced two of the standout performances at the Welsh Athletics Track Invitational in Newport on Saturday. European Under-23 Championship hopeful Adebiyi ran a personal best in the 800m, while Cooper ran a fast 3,000m as she chases her double ambition of breaking the Welsh steeplechase record and claiming a Commonwealth Games spot.
There was to be no repeat of the European Indoor Championship medal winning success for Joe Brier and his Great Britain 4x400m relay team-mates as they returned to Poland for the World Relay Championships on Saturday night. The Swansea Harrier was part of the GB men’s team which won an impressive bronze in Torun at the beginning of March.
