Wales captain Sophie Ingle is playing for the “best team in the world” according to former England striker Eni Aluko. Ingle is preparing for Chelsea’s Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona this weekend having already pocketed a second successive Women’s Super League title medal. The Wales skipper – now playing regularly in midfield rather than defence for both her country and her club – was part of the Blues’ line-up that lifted the domestic league trophy last weekend with a thumping 5-0 win over Reading.
Swansea City and Newport County will be playing their home play-off matches in front of fans for the first time this season. The move has been confirmed by the Welsh Government who have given the green light for both clubs’ ties to be played in front of supporters as pilot events as part of the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. The go-ahead means both Welsh clubs will not be disadvantaged as they might have been after English clubs were given the okay to allow a limited number of fans back for their home ties.
Toby Booth believes the Ospreys have signed another leader with the recruitment of New Zealander Michael Collins. The 27-year-old – who is eligible for Wales through his grandfather – will move to the Liberty Stadium this summer from the Highlanders on a two-year deal. The New Zealand Under-20 three-quarter, who can play centre or full back, played in the Blues side that defeated the British and Irish Lions in 2017.
Beth Munro has admitted she is “in a dream world” after joining Welsh para-taekwondo star Matt Bush in earning Great Britain places at this summer’s Paralympics in Tokyo. The Welsh pair secured their spots at the European taekwondo qualifiers in Bulgaria at the weekend. Team GB already had one place guaranteed through world number one Amy Truesdale in the +58kg event, but now the Welsh duo will make up a three-strong team.
Newport County goalkeeper Tom King believes Forest Green Rovers will badly miss former Rodney Parade hero Jamille Matt when the two clubs clash in the play-offs. County clinched their place in the League Two mini-series after a 1-1 draw at Southend at the weekend, where they were indebted to King for a penalty save that kept the scores level. It ensured the Exiles finished fifth in the final table, on the same points as sixth-placed Forest Green who they will now meet over two legs.
The Scarlets may have sacked head coach Glenn Delaney but they are busy making plans for next season by lining up Argentina Test star Tomas Lezana. Delaney was dismissed on Saturday night with the region having second thoughts over kicking him upstairs to become their director of rugby. Instead, they are kicking him out with Dwayne Peel being given a clear run at things next season with no influence from over his shoulder.
Jenny Nesbitt produced a devastating front-running performance to blow away a strong domestic field at the British Milers Club Grand Prix at Trafford on Saturday night. The Welsh Commonwealth Games hopeful led from gun to tape to win the 5,000m A race by a huge margin in a time of 15:40.10.
Bullish Barnsley manager Valerien Ismael has warned Swansea City the momentum is all with his team as they prepare to host Swansea City in the first leg of the Championship play-offs. Ismael is in confident mood after his club completed a hugely impressive second half of the season during which they won 13 out of 19 games. Only Watford managed to achieve a better run in.
The JD Cymru Premier title race will be decided on the final day of the season after Connah’s Quay and The New Saints proved too strong on the penultimate weekend. A 3-0 win over Bala Town temporarily put The New Saints back top of the table, before Connah’s Quay ran out 4-0 winners against 10-man […]
Mike Flynn has told his Newport County team there are no medals for those who stumble at the final hurdle. Flynn’s promotion-chasers play their final match of the season today with their League Two play-off fate very much in their own hands. The Exiles travel to face already-relegated Southend United knowing a point will seal them a place in the end-of-campaign shoot-out.
Connah’s Quay will know whether the Cymru Premier title is within their grasp by the time tomorrow afternoon’s late match against Caernarfon Town starts (5.15, live on Sgorio). Anything less than a win for The New Saints in their earlier game against Barry Town (2:30) would leave Connah’s Quay within three points of retaining the […]
Gemma Frizelle has been selected to compete for Great Britain at the 2021 Rhythmic European Championships to be staged in Varna, Bulgaria, between 10-13 June. Carmarthen-born Frizelle, who turned 23 last Sunday, was part of Team Wales at the last Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018 and is a contender for Birmingham next year. Frizelle, who is attached to Llanelli Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy, also competed at the Rhythmic World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, three years ago.
Lauren Price was narrowly beaten by old rival Nouchka Fontjin on her ring return at the Grand Prix event in Ústí nad Labem in the Czech Republic. The 26-year-old defeat at the hands of the Dutch boxer leaves her with bronze from her second competitive event of 2021.
Ken Owens was one of 10 Welsh players and four Scarlets to make the British and Irish Lions squad, but there’s no rest for The Sheriff. He’s back in action on Saturday in the Rainbow Cup against the Ospreys, underlining the dedication that will make him the Lions’ Test hooker, says Adam Jones as he tells Graham Thomas. Ken Owens is “nailed on” to become the Lions Test hooker this summer, according to his former Wales front row teammate Adam Jones. Owens was one of four Scarlets and 10 Welsh players named on Thursday in the Lions squad to tour South Africa.
While some may have been eyeing the central heating controls on what seemed like one of the coldest May evenings in living memory, Kyron Duke was delighted to be competing in the driving, icy rain in Cardiff. To be fair, he wasn’t alone. There was a strong turnout for this week’s Run With the Wind event with athletes of all disciplines raring to go after the disruptions of the past year.
Tokyo’s state of emergency has been extended until the end of May in a bid to tackle rising coronavirus infections, according to reports – placing more doubts over the staging of the delayed Olympic Games. The Japanese capital is due to host the Games in just over two months’ time, with the Paralympic Games to follow. A number of Welsh athletes and para athletes such as Jade Jones, Elinor Barker, Aled Davies, Dan Jervis Alys Thomas, Jacob Draper, Leah Wilkinson, Emily Thomas, Holly Arnold, Chris Grube, Hannah Mills and others are hoping to be in Japan this summer
Two years ago Welsh sprint sensation Jeremiah Azu had European Under-20 gold within his grasp when disaster struck. The Cardiff athlete was just yards from victory in the 100m final when he pulled up sharply, clutching his hamstring in agony. The then 18-year-old’s challenge ended in pain and anguish, face down on the Ryavallen Athletics Stadium track in Sweden.
Alun Wyn Jones believes the number of captaincy candidates for this summer’s British and Irish Lions’ tour to South Africa reached “probably double figures”. And Jones acclaimed the leadership quality of England lock Maro Itoje, who was widely thought to be his main rival for Lions captaincy duties. Wales skipper Jones will lead the 2021 Lions, adding another gilt-edged entry to a career CV that already includes five Six Nations titles, three Grand Slams and two World Cup semi-final appearances.
Morgan Whittaker has admitted he wasn’t surprised to be racially abused on Instagram – he was actually expecting it. The Swansea City striker became the fourth player from the Championship club to be racially abused this season via social media, and it came during the official Football League blackout. Having scored a vital goal in the win over relegation threatened Derby County last weekend, his former club, Whittaker said he was “buzzing”. Then came the horrible realisation that his goal had sparked a terrible reaction.
Rob Page plans to pick the brains of Chris Coleman before Wales begin another Euro finals adventure. Caretaker manager Page intends to sound out Coleman for advice, having already drafted in one of the former manager’s assistants, Kit Symons to the cause. Five years ago, Coleman led Wales all the way to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 and Page – who was last month confirmed in charge in the absence of Ryan Giggs – wants to glean the inside track on how Wales can make a similar impact at this year’s delayed tournament.
