Paul Turner believes a development Anglo-Welsh league would help solve the annual Welsh identity crisis on the eve of the Six Nations. For the fourth year in succession, Welsh rugby will have no representatives in the last eight of the Heineken Champions and none in the last 16 this season following tournament changes introduced to streamline the number of matches during the pandemic. In fact, in the past decade, only the Scarlets in 2018 and Cardiff Blues in 2012 have made the last eight of the main tournament and this year’s attempts in both the Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup have been weaker than ever.
By Paul Evans It might not be the result that Elfyn Evans wanted, but there are plenty of positives for the Welsh driver to take away from the 2022 Monte Carlo Rally. Having finished third in 2020 and second in 2021, he can’t shy away from the disappointment of coming home 21st this time. But […]
By Aled Wheeler Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel is looking to move on from European competition after his side crashed out of the Champions Cup on Saturday. Despite a competitive first half, the Scarlets failed to keep up with Bristol’s aggressive play. A ruthless closing 20 minutes from the visitors secured them an impressive 52-21 […]
Russell Martin has paid tribute to Swansea City’s fans, claiming they inspired his team to victory after returning to their home stadium for the first time in seven weeks. Ryan Manning’s superb long-range strike was enough to seal all three points for Swansea as they overcame Preston 1-0. Manning’s 51st-minute strike was reward for a much-improved display after the break from Martin’s men and the result leaves them sitting just behind mid-table in the Championship, with four points gathered from back-to-back unbeaten games.
Jamie Roberts is set to extend his illustrious career by joining Australian Super Rugby franchise the Waratahs. The former Wales and British & Irish Lions centre is currently under contract at the Dragons. But it is understood the 35-year-old is set to leave Welsh rugby for one last adventure in Sydney, with the Dragons expected to grant him early release. In his prime, the 94-times capped Wales international, who also played a starring role on two British & Irish Lions tours, was among the best centres in the world game.
Steve Morison appears to be gambling his future on provoking a response from his Cardiff City players after he accused them of lacking the stomach for a fight. The Bluebirds manager – who has been criticised by former stars in recent weeks for laying into individual players – poured scorn on his entire squad for what he saw as character failings in their 3-2 defeat at Bristol City. Morison was appointed Cardiff’s permanent boss in November, but only until the end of the season and has won just two of 10 matches since.
Wales’ young guns took the World Athletics Indoor Tour event in Manchester by storm on Saturday afternoon. Osian Perrin shattered his own UK 3,000m indoor junior record, Jeremiah Azu clocked a World Indoor Athletics Championships qualifying time in the 60m and Piers Copeland celebrated an impressive 1500m win.
Pat Lam insists his Bristol Bears have plenty of good reasons to finally get stuck into the Scarlets this weekend – about 300,000 of them. The English club’s head coach reckons the cancellation of their home fixture against the Welsh region in December cost Bristol around £300,000. Lam acknowledges the 28-0 walkover victory in the Heineken Champions Cup occurred through no fault of the Scarlets – who were hit by Covid and isolation problems after their infamous trip to South Africa – but says their automatic four-tries-to-nil victory came at a cost.
Former Wales hooker Richard Hibbard has announced his retirement from rugby. Hibbard played 38 Wales internationals and three Tests for the Lions on the 2013 successful tour of Australia. The 38-year-old made his Wales debut against Argentina in 2006 and the last of his Tests came nine years later at home to Ireland. “I’m sad to say my body has finally said enough is enough,” said Hibbard. “What a ride it’s been. I’ve been lucky enough to do everything I’ve wanted, and more, in this great game.”
By Lucy Rees Team GB has named Adele Nicoll amongst the eight bobsledders heading to the Winter Olympics next month in Beijing. After first stepping into a bobsleigh back in 2020, her first World Cup race in 2021, and being selected as a reserve in 2022, it’s fair to say the shot putter has come […]
By Paul Jones New Cardiff City signing Tommy Doyle asked Hamburg to end his loan spell in Germany in order to play more games. The 20-year-old midfielder – who had joined the Bluebirds on loan until the end of the season – has spent the first half of the season in the Bundesliga 2, farmed […]
By Steffan Thomas James Ratti is relishing the prospect of linking up with the Wales squad next week after taking the hard route to the top. The Cardiff Rugby No 8’s journey to international rugby has been a bumpy one, with many ups and downs along the way. Just three years ago the 24-year-old was […]

By Lucy Rees Following the announcement in November last year, the WRU has named the nine women on the brand new retainer contracts for the next 12 months. The announcement follows the 12 full-time contracts given out last week, and the WRU are yet to name up to six more players on retainer contracts. Given […]
Two home wins from reaching the World Cup finals, seven games without a defeat, and 30,000-plus fervent fans ready to roar in Cardiff come March. These are unprecedented times for the Welsh men’s national football side. A squad that boasts experience and yet youthful exuberance, that’s laced with proven quality but also potential, that excites in attack and yet is resolute when needs must.
By Hannah Blackwell Laura Deas believes she can be inspired to win another Olympic medal when she heads to China for the Winter Olympics next month. Deas – the first Welsh woman to win a medal at the Winter Games – has been named in the Great Britain skeleton squad that will compete in Beijing, […]
A blistering first period display from the Cardiff Devils wiped out the Dundee Stars’ 4-2 first-leg lead to set up a mouthwatering Challenge Cup semi-final with rivals Sheffield Steelers. Needing to overturn a two-goal deficit, the Devils turned the tie on its head scoring four without reply in a clinical opening frame. Brodie Reid’s powerplay […]
Right, then. Here we go. The start of what will be a World Rally Championship winning year for Elfyn Evans. Hopefull For the first time in the sport’s history, a Welsh driver will begin the new season as favourite for the world rally title. Evans has finished runner-up for the last two seasons and the driver who has beaten him both times – eight-time world champion Sébastien Ogier – isn’t doing a full season.
Byline Gareth James Robert Page is set to take charge of Wales in the World Cup play-offs after Ryan Giggs’ domestic violence trial was delayed until August. Giggs has been on leave from his role as Wales manager since November 2020 when he was arrested at his Manchester home. The former Manchester United star is […]
