Father’s Day is probably the perfect occasion to tell the story of Welsh Commonwealth Games athlete Amber Simpson. A pair of running shoes bought by her step-dad helped Simpson combat the bullying which plagued her school days and led to the launch of her career as an international hammer thrower.

By Stuart Taylor While football and rugby fans continue to squabble over which sport is Wales’s No.1, boxing managed to deliver a timely ‘remember me’ dig with its resurgence into the Welsh sporting psyche. In Geneva, on Saturday evening, Joe Brier ran the fastest 400m time by a Welshman in 13 years and then showed an equally impressive turn of speed to return to Cardiff by Sunday afternoon. The Swansea Harrier wanted to be back in time to watch his girlfriend run in the 400m final at the Welsh Athletics Championships where he would also be cheering on his sister, Hannah, to the 100m title. It had been something of a whirlwind few days for the Brier siblings, who were both named last Wednesday in the Welsh athletics squad for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

I once had reason to walk down the high street in Llanelli one afternoon, alongside Phil Bennett. It felt like the scene from a sentimental Hollywood film. Women shouted their hellos from every shop front, men yelled down from scaffolding and every other car beeped cheerily and drivers waved at the town’s most famous and best-loved resident. But the really striking thing was that as the Scarlets’ greatest ever rugby player responded, he seemed to know the name of every well-wisher.
Dylan Thomas once described Swansea as an ugly lovely town. On Sunday, Swansea Harrier Hannah Brier produced an ugly lovely race on day two of the Welsh Athletics Championships.

New mum Elinor Barker may have grabbed the attention with her recent selection for the Commonwealth Games, but there’s plenty more happening in Welsh cycling at present. Owen Morgan sampled two events either side of selection for Birmingham, which both underlined how the sport in Wales is currently enjoying a boom time. Wales once again this week showed off what a wonderful cycling venue it has become. From Wrexham in the north to the Black Mountain in the south – with Aberystwyth and Welshpool enjoying starring roles in between – the nation showed off its finery.
Lauren Evans and Lemarl Freckleton were two of the stand-out performers on the first day of the Welsh Athletics Championships in Cardiff on Saturday. With members of the Welsh Commonwealth Games athletics team announced on Wednesday being introduced to the crowd, Evans celebrated her own selection for Birmingham in fine style. The Cardiff heptathlete, who received an invitation to join Team Wales direct from the Commonwealth Games Federation, marked the achievement by winning the 100m hurdles Welsh title at the city’s International Sports Campus in Leckwith.
Rob Page praised the blossoming talent of Brennan Johnson after the Wales striker scored his first international goal to earn a 1-1 draw with Belgium. Johnson slid home Aaron Ramsey’s pass three minutes from time, to give Wales their first points in their Nations League campaign at a vibrant Cardiff City Stadium. But the Nottingham Forest star – who will be playing in the Premier League next season – had to endure an agonising VAR check for offside before the celebrations could begin.
