Welsh netball legend Suzy Drane has announced her retirement from the international game and will not be part of the squad for next year’s World Cup in South Africa. Drane, who has won a record 125 caps for her country, has chosen to bring down the curtain on her time with the national side at the age of 36 – bringing to a close the end of a remarkable 20-year Test career. “It feels like the right time,” said Drane in an announcement made on the Wales Netball website.
By David Williams Forer Wales captain Siwan Lillicrap who retired following the conclusion of the 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup aged 35, with 51 caps to her name, has been appointed as the forwards coach of Wales Under-18s. The dynamic backrower made her debut for Wales against Ireland in 2016 and had captained the since […]
By Matthew Burgess Todd Kelman hopes new signing Rory Herrman can emulate current Cardiff Devils forward Riley Brandt, after signing the 23 year-old forward to his first professional contract. The San Diego-born left-shooter can play at both centre and wing, and will help ease the Devils’ ongoing injury problems. Herrman graduated this season from the […]
Many of the world’s greatest gravel forest stages – like Myherin, Sweet Lamb, Dyfnant, Hafren and Crychan – will come together to form the 2023 Motorsport UK Pirelli Ravenol Welsh Rally Championship, with an exciting seven-round calendar planned for next year. Organised by the Welsh Association of Motor Clubs, the 2023 series will offer competitors a good geographical spread and a good date balance, with the first round taking place at the end of March, the final round at the end of October and only one event taking place over the months of June, July and August, providing plenty of time for mid-season car repairs during the summer break. Each event will have an ultra-compact one-day format, with around 45 stage miles and minimal road mileage.
By James Reid Wrexham rower Lucy Thomson admits she is still searching for the right formula as she gets to grips with balancing her career on the water with the classroom. The 18-year-old, who will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Wrexham’s former Welsh rowing great Vicky Thornley, capped 2022 in style with […]
By Paul Jones There were plenty of questions left unanswered by Gerwyn Price’s performance, but the former Neath and Cross Keys hooker began his quest for a second world title with a ground out 3-1 victory against Luke Woodhouse at Alexandra Palace. Missing some of his usual exuberance on stage, the current world number one […]
By David Williams Southampton manager Nathan Jones hopes to see his early work rewarded in the Carabao Cup as he makes a belated bow at St Mary’s. Welshman Jones, was unveiled as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s successor just before the World Cup break, with the Rhondda native’s only game in charge to date being a 3-1 Premier […]
Ospreys boss Toby Booth says his team’s emotional Heineken Champions Cup win out in Montpellier has set the benchmark ahead of the BKT United Rugby Championship festive derbies. Booth’s men pulled off a stunning 21-10 victory away to the French title holders thanks to tries from hooker Sam Parry, centre Kieran Williams and Player of the Match, No.8 Morgan Morris. It’s handed them a huge boost in morale as they prepare for the URC Boxing Day clash at home to the Scarlets and then the New Year’s Day trip to the Arms Park to take on Cardiff.
Dai Young has urged his Cardiff players to keep their feet hard down on the pedals and build on their European success by dominating the forthcoming festive derbies. The Arms Park director of rugby was full of praise for his team after their thumping 47-10 victory away at Newcastle in the European Challenge Cup. But he has urged them to maintain the momentum in the URC when they make a Boxing Day trip to Rodney Parade to take on a Dragons side who have received plaudits for their performances this season.
Russell Martin admitted he was left feeling conflicted by Swansea City’s performance at Coventry City – “proud” of their comeback in a 3-3 draw, but angry at elements within the first hour he branded “a disgrace.” The Swans head coach watched his team go 3-0 down at the CBS Arena and questioned their commitment levels. Jonathan Panzo headed home before second-half strikes from Jamie Allen and Viktor Gyokeres put Coventry in total control. But in the final 22 minutes, the visitors turned things around to claim a point through goals from Joel Piroe, Jay Fulton and Liam Cullen.
Ospreys head coach Toby Booth praised his team after their first win in Europe for two years – but insisted it was just reward for their recent efforts. The Swansea-based region shocked the TOP 14 champions with tries from Sam Parry, Kieran Williams and Morgan Morris, and produced an immense defensive effort to restrict the hosts to just one score. Brandon Paenga-Amosa crossed for Montpellier, who were ultimately outfought and outclassed on their own turf.
Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman has urged people not to forget the “human side” of the Emiliano Sala dispute – whilst continuing to argue the club are right not to pay up. The club have been placed under a transfer embargo after failing to pay the first instalment of the fee owed to Ligue 1 club Nantes for Sala. Sala died in a plane crash in the English Channel as he travelled to Cardiff after signing for the club in £15 million deal in January 2019. The pilot of the flight, David Ibbotson, also died.
It’s close on a decade now since Rhodri Williams made his Wales debut as a fresh-faced 20-year-old. There were outings off the bench against Tonga, Australia and Scotland, complete with a try in the last of those games. The Swansea-born scrum-half has been away from the international stage since 2014, but fast forward eight years and you find him playing some of the best rugby of his life.
Cardiff City and Blackpool face a tougher survival battle this season than last, according to Tangerines boss Michael Appleton. The Bluebirds host Blackpool on Saturday in a relegation battle that is likely to see one or other – or even both – in the Championship relegation zone over the Christmas period. Mark Hudson’s Cardiff are currently in 20th position, but just a point above the relegation zone, while Blackpool are two points worse off and just one place off the bottom.
By Matthew Burgess The Cardiff Devils are hoping favourable results across the Elite League this weekend can deliver them an early Christmas present and boost their title prospects. The Devils have the ideal opportunity to add to their points total with a home double-header against the Dundee Stars and Glasgow Clan over successive evenings. Yet, […]
Max Clark insists he was right to buck the trend and move from English to Welsh rugby as he believes joining the Dragons has jolted him out of his comfort zone. At a time when the likes of Dragons forward Will Rowlands and Cardiff centre Max Llewellyn are leaving Wales, Clark moved in the opposite direction when he left Bath to move to Rodney Parade this summer. Having earned his stripes alongside the likes of Jamie Roberts and England star Jonathan Joseph at the Rec, Clark will be aiming to maintain the Dragons’ unbeaten start to their European Challenge Cup campaign on Saturday when they host Pau in a match that is live on S4C.
Russell Martin has revealed he has yet to open any talks about extending his deal as head coach at Swansea City. Martin has 20 months left on his contract after signing a three-year deal when he succeeded Steve Cooper in charge in August 2021. The 36-year-old has earned widespread admiration for the work he has done at the Swans, particularly their playing style, but has insisted his priority is nailing down new deals for some of his key players rather than his own future.

Former world champion Gerwyn Price – The Iceman – and last year’s Premier League winner Jonny Clayton will lead the Welsh challenge, but there are four other members of the darting dragonhood.
