Jackett – now in charge at promotion-chasing League One club Portsmouth – believes Anglesey-born Donohue, 24, will soon be ready for full international honours. Raised in the village of Bodedern, Donohue, signed for Pompey from Chesterfield at the start of the season and has impressed in his debut campaign, making 32 appearances so far, mainly at left back.
Welsh women’s sport will be tested to the full in two ‘David v Goliath’ clashes against England on Friday. First up it will be Leah Wilkinson’s Welsh hockey side in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and then Sophie Ingle’s footballers will face a top of the table World Cup qualifying clash at St Mary’s, Southampton. Both English teams are ranked as the second best teams in the world and in both sports they are expected to go on and challenge for the title. But the Welsh women are closing the gap and are keen to make a statement.
James Chester has revealed how Wales players were still going strong at 3am every night in China – although it was certainly no party. The Aston Villa defender says the squad prepared for their return to domestic duties with late nights – to counter the time difference – at the China Cup. Ryan Giggs took charge of the national side for the first time in the four-team competition in Nanning during the international break and contended with an eight-hour time difference with the UK.
Ryan Giggs defended Gareth Bale’s contribution after he suffered his first defeat as Wales manager to Uruguay in the China Cup final. Real Madrid star Bale has been the big attraction at this four-team tournament in Nanning with his every move monitored by the media and his Chinese fan base. But Bale was overshadowed by Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani as they inspired Uruguay to a 1-0 win.

Harry Wilson is desperate to show he is ready for Liverpool and Wales after Craig Bellamy questioned the decision to cap him as a 16-year-old. Wilson broke Gareth Bale’s record to become Wales’ youngest-ever player at the age of 16 years and 207 days when he made a cameo appearance against Belgium in October 2013 – the final game of Bellamy’s 78-cap career. The dual-qualified Liverpool midfielder had attracted interest from England, and Bellamy said after that Brussels draw he was uncomfortable with fast-tracking the teenager into the senior squad to tie him to Wales.

Wales are out in China, having handed out a few lessons to the country considered to be the birthplace of an ancient form of football. This summer VAR technology will be used at the World Cup – a technological progress for the grand old game that Spencer Buchan believes will only continue. Brits have long been celebrated as the inventors of modern day football, although some would argue that its origins can be traced as far back as ancient China. Regardless, it’s fair to say that football has travelled bounds ever since the early days of a ball and a group of players on a field. All these changes will be showcased in full force at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. At this year’s World Cup, we will be able to record games from all angles with high-powered cameras, use goal-line technology to make key decisions, notice the peak of footballer’s athletic development and focus and introduce VAR for the first time ever on an international stage.
Gareth Bale has always been adored by Wales fans but his global appeal was once again in evidence as the Real Madrid superstar became his country’s record goalscorer in a 6-0 thrashing of China. Bale’s first international hat-trick saw him move past Ian Rush and on to 29 goals as he got Ryan Giggs’ tenure as Chris Coleman’s successor off to the perfect start in Nanning. It meant there was only one man on the lips of the 36,533-strong Guangxi Sports Centre crowd. At the full-time whistle, Bale cradled the match ball and walked along the touchline with Wales’ hardy travelling support and thousands of fervent Chinese supporters standing in appreciation to applaud the 28-year-old’s spectacular individual display.
