Former Cardiff City defender Declan John could be on his way back to Wales to join Swansea City.

John is one of a number of late options being considered by the Swans before Thursday’s transfer deadline as manager Graham Potter seeks to strengthen his defence.

The 23-year-old Wales full-back is currently at Rangers, but appears to be out of favour with new manager Steve Gerrard.

John moved to Ibrox from the Bluebirds in a loan deal last summer after falling down the pecking order under Neil Warnock.

The move was made permanent in December and John established himself in Scotland, making 31 appearances for Rangers in all competitions.

But Gerrard is close to signing another left-back, Borna Barisic, from Croatian club Osijek in a £2.2m deal and it appears John will be allowed to leave.

A return to Wales might suit Merthyr-born John, who made his name as a rapid and skilful left winger or full-back at Cardiff, good enough to make his debut for Wales at 18.

He made 20 appearances for Cardiff in their Premier League season of 2013-14, but struggled after the Bluebirds were relegated and went on loan spells to Barnsley and Chesterfield before moving to Rangers.

The Swans are keen to improve their resources at left-back where they have no specialist cover to challenge established first choice Martin Olsson.
