Ryan Giggs was proud of his team despite losing 2-1 to Denmark at the Cardiff City Stadium in their final game of their Nations League campaign. Gareth Bale scored what turned out to be a consolation for Wales after goals from Nicolai Jørgensen and Martin Braithwaite helped the Danes seal promotion to the top tier. The victory guarantees them Group B4 winners’ status and a play-off spot for Euro 2020. As for Wales, this defeat leaves them remaining in the second tier where Giggs feels his team have learned a lot from this tournament.
Despite a Gareth Bale goal and feverish finish, Wales’ hopes of promotion to the top tier of the Nations League ended with a 2-1 defeat to a streetwise Denmark in Cardiff. In another game that undermined the value of this new tournament compared to the old futility of international friendlies, Wales were edged out by the classy Danes in an often fractious and frenetic clash. But Wales manager Ryan Giggs can take consolation from highly encouraging displays from his youngsters against one of the best current form sides in European football.

Tyler Roberts has paid tribute to his Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa for helping him make his breakthrough for Wales. Bielsa is better known for his intense moods and fearsome dressing room explosions, rather than playing the fairy godfather. But young striker Roberts – who could win a fourth Wales cap against Denmark on Friday – says he owes the man known as “El Loco” back in his homeland of Argentina. “I haven’t seen him blow up,” Roberts said. “He was OK after Saturday (when Leeds lost 4-1 at West Brom).

James Lawrence may not be a household name in his adopted country, Wales, but he is certainly someone well known to Danish danger man Christian Eriksen. For as well as rubbing shoulders with the likes of Harry Kane and Jack Wilshire in the junior ranks at Arsenal, the 26-year-old Anderlecht defender played with Eriksen in the Ajax youth team in Holland. Lawrence was given a big surprise when manager Ryan Giggs called him up into the Wales squad last week for the Nations League clash against the Danes. He was shocked again when Eriksen sent him a message saying, “See you on Friday!”
Welsh international Ethan Ampadu is the inspiration for players in manager Paul Bodin’s Wales under-19 squad. That’s Bodin’s view as he prepares his young Welsh players for Uefa under-19 Championship action. Chelsea’s Ampadu is 18-years-old and still qualifies for Bodin’s group, but is now playing senior international football. “For players like Ethan, who is the […]
