Ryan Giggs has been priced as a 10-1 fourth favourite to become the next permanent manager of Manchester United following Jose Mourinho’s sacking. The Wales manager – who has previously managed United in a caretaker role – is behind French pair Lauren Blanc and Zinedine Zidane as well as Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino in the early betting. Giggs was given a four-year contract by the FAW when he took over from Chris Coleman back in January, but it was not clarified at the time of his appointment what release clauses had been inserted.
Wales will return to play at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham for the first in 10 years for an international challenge match against Trinidad and Tobago on March 20 next year. The game will be the first match of 2019 for Ryan Giggs’ side as they prepare for their first EURO 2020 qualifying match against Slovakia in Cardiff four days later.
Wales youth international Sion Spence returned to action Craig Bellamy’s young Bluebirds – and they turned on a sparkling team display in a 5-1 home win against Charlton Athletic. Spence, who has recovered from a long-term injury problem, watched for most of the match before being sent on just after the hour. Neil Warnock’s teenage […]
Wales have lined up four friendly games as part of their preparations for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 qualifiers. Jayne Ludlow’s squad will open the year with a tough trip to Italy on January 22 before facing the Republic of Ireland as part of warm-weather training camp in Malaga, Spain on February 28.
Cardiff City will travel to Gillingham in the Emirates FA Cup third round. The Bluebirds make the long trip to Kent for what will be a tricky tie. “I’m delighted,” said Swansea-born Gillingham manager Steve Lovell. “It will be a great tie. A Welsh team, too. “They will bring good support so it will be […]
Ryan Giggs has admitted Wales’ humbling defeat in Albania has given “context” to a young national team the manager says has plenty left to learn. Giggs suffered his fifth defeat in nine matches in charge when the Albanians – 42 places lower than Wales in the FIFA rankings – won a scrappy friendly, 1-0, on Tuesday evening. It was a result and a performance which the former Manchester United star considered a reality check against some of the gushing praise that has come the way of a richly talented but inconsistent group of youngsters.
Ryan Giggs suffered a nasty reminder of the bad old days as Wales stumbled to a 1-0 defeat to Albania. The manager must hope it was a one-off embarrassment, a hangover from the disappointment of the way the Nations League campaign ended as his first year in charge ended on a low note in Elbasan. Albania are ranked 42 spots below 18th-placed Wales in the FIFA rankings, had scored only twice in their previous eight games and were fresh from losing 4-0 at home to Scotland in the Nations League.
Wales have qualified play against Europe’s elite in the Uefa Under-19 Championships. Their 2-0 win against San Marino at Nantporth, Bangor sent manager Paul Bodin’s team through to the Elite round of the competition. Wales finished runners-up to Scotland, who drew 2-2 against Sweden in their group match. Lewis Collins (52 mins) and Sam Bowen […]
Chris Gunter becomes Wales’ most capped male international when he makes his 93rd appearance for his country, against Albania in Elbasan. Dai Sport’s Terry Phillips first watched Gunter play when he was a young schoolboy with Cardiff City almost two decades ago. Chris Gunter has come a long way since his schoolboy days supporting Cardiff […]
Ryan Giggs insists he is not in danger of upsetting Real Madrid by taking Gareth Bale to Albania to play in Tuesday night’s friendly. The Wales manager chose to take Bale with the squad to Elbasan, even though the player has suffered from a number of injuries this season that have sparked debate in Spain over his commitment to the club’s cause compared to his desire to play for his country. Bale will have travelled over 3,000 miles by the time he returns to Madrid before he is expected to be available for La Liga action at Eibar on Saturday.
The man who has slowed the relentless cap accumulation of Chris Gunter plans on getting many more of his own for Wales. Connor Roberts is set to line up alongside Gunter in Albania, where Gunter will be given the nod to earn his 93rd cap, so breaking the national record of former goalkeeper Neville Southall. In a breakthrough year for club and country, Roberts has become a Swansea City regular and ousted Gunter from the regular right-back spot at international level.
Chris Gunter has made a cheeky request to Gareth Bale, saying: “Mate, can I borrow your plane? Wales full-back Gunter is hoping the Real Madrid star will lend him his private jet to fly out family for his record-breaking Wales appearance in Albania. The Reading defender will become Wales’ most capped player on Tuesday night when he overtakes former goalkeeper Neville Southall’s 92-game haul.
