Swansea City have cancelled their pre-match press conference ahead of their planned fixture at Birmingham City on Saturday as clubs await a decision on whether this weekend’s games will go ahead following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Swans head coach Russell Martin was due to host a briefing on Friday morning, but the club announced late on Thursday evening it would not go ahead. The EFL games scheduled for this evening – Burnley v Norwich in the Championship and Tranmere v Stockport in League Two – have already been postponed.
Michael Obafemi has been told to clear his head and let his feet do the talking. The sage advice has come from his Swansea City captain Matt Grimes, who knows what it is to have cluttered head space. Obafemi was left out of the Swans’ squad for the weekend 1-0 win over QPR by head coach Russell Martin after the striker’s hopes of a £10m deadline day move to Burnley evaporated.
Russell Martin reckons the best move Swansea City made during the transfer window was to give Leeds United the brush off when they came calling for Joel Piroe. After a 1-0 home win over QPR, the Swans head coach was full of praise and admiration for his Dutch striker, who has been the subject of rumour and speculation over a possible departure all summer. Martin admitted the uncertainty had affected last season’s top scorer in the opening weeks of the campaign, but once the window closed – and Leeds’ tentative enquiries on deadline day were rebuffed – then Piroe’s first game without conjecture saw him back to his familiar best.
Welsh international rugby star Sam Davies has had plenty of dramatic moments on live TV – but now it’s the turn of his partner, Elianna Chavez. Dragons No.10 Davies will be among those tuning in this weekend for the start of the Genero Adran Premier League, when interest and hype around women’s football has never been higher. The success of this summer’s Euro 2022 tournament, hosts England’s triumph in the final, plus Wales’ gathering momentum towards a possible first World Cup finals qualification, has all combined to focus attention on the sport.
By Harry Corish Cardiff City continued their busy summer transfer window, signing Republic of Ireland International Callum Robinson with a permanent deal on deadline day. City fans wanted to see a Striker brought in and Steve Morrison and Cardiff’s recruitment team were able to get their hands on a fantastic Championship quality Forward. Meanwhile, on […]
Russell Martin admitted more frustration after Swansea City conceded another injury time goal for the fifth consecutive midweek match. The Swans head coach watched his team take the lead at Stoke City on Wednesday evening through Joel Piroe – only to surrender two points when Tyrese Campbell equalised in the 91st minute to claim a 1-1 draw for new manager Alex Neil. Since Easter – across the end of last season and the start of the current campaign – the Swans have let slip an aggregate lead of 11 goals across five midweek matches in a row.
By Gareth James Russell Martin has challenged his Swansea City players to dictate matters at Stoke City, where new boss Alex Neil will be hoping to whip up a storm. The Swans travel to the Potteries on Wednesday evening, keen to end a run of just one win in six Championship matches after back-to-back defeats […]
Swansea City head coach Russell Martin has admitted he is bracing himself for the loss of Joel Piroe after making striker Armstrong Okoflex his sixth summer signing. Martin has revealed West Ham youngster Okoflex – who scored 18 goals for the Hammers’ Under 23 side last season – is moving to the Swansea.com Stadium on a season-long loan. It appears to be an early re-fit for his forward line before the transfer deadline closes on Thursday, by which time Martin concedes last season’s top scorer Piroe may well have left the club.
Joe Allen has admitted Swansea City players are “letting themselves down” with their current inability to deal with adversity. The Wales midfielder was reflecting on another defeat for the Swans – their third of the current campaign – which has dropped them into the relegation zone. Allen was part of the side beaten 2-1 at Middlesbrough at the weekend, leaving Russell Martin’s side in 22nd place in the table with just one win from the first six games.
Russell Martin has revealed he must sell Swansea City “assets” such as Joel Piroe if he is to strengthen a squad weakened by long term injuries. The Swans head coach decided to lay bare the policy of the club’s American owners in response to questioning after his team’s 2-0 home defeat to Luton Town on Saturday. Martin’s team have won just once in their opening five games of the Championship campaign, are now winless in their last seven home games, and have lost key defender Joel Latibeaudiere for at least three months with a shoulder injury.
By Gareth James Joel Latibeaudiere will miss at least the next three months of the season following the shoulder injury he suffered in Swansea City’s midweek draw with Millwall. The defender – who dislocated his shoulder in the first half and required pain-killing gas while the joint was re-set – is unlikely to play again […]
Russell Martin has told Swansea City fans he takes responsibility for the collapse of their two-goal lead against Millwall that cost them two precious Championship points. The Swans head coach insists the collective lack of authority that resulted in two own goals in injury time – and a 2-2 home draw – is down to him. Martin was angered by one of his benched players – understood to be Jamie Paterson – punching the ball back towards the visitors and enabling them to take a quick throw-in, from which they scored their equaliser.
