Wales Rugby League are looking for a new head coach for their domestic community representative side, Wales Dragonhearts.
The Dragonhearts, who celebrate their 25th anniversary this year as an international representative side, field the best players from the Welsh community game and is normally selected following the WRL community origin series between West Wales, East Wales and North Wales.
The Dragonhearts’ first ever international against another nation was in March 1994 when they went down 14-10 to England at the Morfa Stadium in Swansea.
From that Wales side, Jason Lee was promptly signed by Warrington and ended up playing seven times for the full Welsh national side, scoring four tries in the process, whilst David Williams, also in first side, played for Wales against USA in 1995 and also played professionally for South Wales RLFC in 1996.
They are just two of many Dragonhearts international players to turn professional and play for the full Wales side. Others include current Wales skipper Elliot Kear, Wales’ second highest all-time try scorer Christiaan Roets and future Super League players Aled James, Gil Dudson, Ashley Bateman and Jamie Murphy.
The Dragonhearts entered a community Four Nations tournament between 2002 and 2013, winning the title in the first four seasons. Now they face full international and community representative sides from developing European nations, going to Serbia last year and facing Germany in 2016 and 2017.
Community development officer Peter Tiffin said: “Over the past 12 months we have had a strong interest from some top-quality coaches to be involved within our programmes.
“We have full Wales internationals in charge of under 19s in Ant Walker and Phil Joseph and our Students in Paul Emanuelli and Chris Vitalini. At under 16 level, we have former Hull and Great Britain legend Lee Crooks.
“This is a great time for the sport in Wales as we are inundated with staff wanting to be involved with the sport, and now we have another vacancy as the head coach of the Dragonhearts is up for grabs.
“Having been involved when the Dragonhearts travelled to Germany, I know that this can be a fantastic programme to be in when run correctly. It’s a great position for anyone with a keen interest in community game in Wales.
