Tough taskmaster Steve Tandy has told his Ospreys team they must improve despite their statistically perfect start to the season.
The head coach and his team are top of the Guinness Pro 12 table after two bonus-point victories brought them a maximum 10 points – a breezy start to the campaign, matched only by Glasgow.
But despite scoring nine tries and 91 points in beating Zebre and then champions Connacht, Tandy is unsatisfied.
“It would be easy to get carried away with two bonus point wins but the reality is, we’ve been far from perfect in both games,” said Tandy.
“That’s a good position to be in, when you’ve got everything you could have wanted from the games but still have plenty of work-ons.”
Wales scrum half Rhys Webb scored two of the Ospreys’ four tries at Connacht, where Tyler Ardron and Jeff Hassler helped secure an emphatic 32-11 victory.
But Tandy – who stressed the need for a quick start to the season after last year’s laboured beginnings – will not allow his squad to feel comfortable.
“For all the good at Connacht, we were sloppy in attack at times, particularly during the first half,” he added.
“We’ll keep striving to be the best we can be, we know we have a lot of work to do, and with the run of games we’ve got coming up, we’re also well aware that if we don’t improve where we need to then we could be in for a bit of a shock and come crashing back to earth if we allow ourselves to get carried away with a couple of wins.”
Webb says the squad are feeling their benefits of their pre-season training, which included a trip to Belgium.
“The boys have had a good pre-season and worked extremely hard on their fitness, skill set and accuracy,” said Webb.
“They’ve had long days and are playing some good rugby.”
