Scotland have suffered a huge blow ahead of their RBS Six Nations clash with Wales with skipper Greig Laidlaw ruled out for the rest of the tournament.
The Gloucester scrum-half suffered an ankle injury just before half-time in the 22-16 defeat to France in Paris last Sunday.
Laidlaw left the Stade de France on crutches and was sent back to his club to be assessed by medics who confirmed the blow.
A statement from the SRU said: “A scan undertaken at his club, Gloucester, confirmed the clinical suspicion that the 58-times capped scrum-half sustained ligament damage midway through the first half.
“The extent of the damage is such that he will take no further part in the current championship.
“Laidlaw will see a specialist later in the week to determine the best course of management and estimated time out of the sport.”
Laidlaw, whose British Lions hopes may know be on the edge, is a key figure for Scotland his goal-kicking ability and leadership skills.
He was being tipped as a possible captaincy contender for the tour to New Zealand while his clash with Rhys Webb could have been a highlight in the battle for the Lions No 9 jersey.
Ali Price, who took over at scrum-half against France, now looks certain to keep the No 9 jersey for the game with Rob Howley’s side at Murrayfield on February 25th
Coach Vern Cotter will also have to decide on a new skipper
Flanker John Barclay took over when Laidlaw limped off but when he then went off with a head knock Jonny Gray claimed the armband.
