Louis Rees-Zammit Plans Tries, Smiles and Clicks At Bristol Bears

He’s back . . . and not that far from Wales, after the decision of Louis Rees-Zammit to join Bristol after his unsuccessful stint in the NFL.

Louis Rees-Zammit says he wants to ignite Bristol fans’ passion after sealing his comeback to the sport with a move to Bristol Bears.

The 24-year-old Wales and British and Irish Lions star has spent the past 18 months chasing an NFL dream, but his new club claim he will start work with them on Friday, 24 hours after flying home from the USA.

Rees_Zammit waved goodbye to rugby in January 2024 to join the NFL’s heavily-marketed International Player Pathway Program.

Stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars followed, but without a serious breakthrough, he chose to return to familiar territory.

Speaking on his decision, Rees-Zammit told the Bristol website, “Bristol Bears was the obvious choice for me.

“The style of rugby the team play – all about entertaining the fans and growing the game – perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field.

“I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall in love with the game.

“I’m excited to return to rugby at a club that demands those values. I’m looking forward to working with my teammates, Pat Lam and the coaches and all the backroom team to bring success to the Bears.”

Away from the field, Rees-Zammit is also believed to have taken notice of the huge online presence built by Bristol Bears Women’s star Ilona Maher.

The USA international has amassed millions of followers across TikTok and Instagram thanks to her mix of rugby insight, behind-the-scenes content, and outgoing personality.

Friends of Rees-Zammit say he has long admired how Maher uses clips and on-field highlights to grow her fanbase well beyond rugby’s traditional audience.

Rees-Zammit, who already boasts a significant online following from his Wales and NFL days, is said to view his move to Bristol as a chance to tap into the same global reach that Maher enjoys.

With his own blend of raw pace, high-profile career switch, and youthful charisma, the Cardiff-born wing sees a clear opportunity to match Maher’s numbers.

Club insiders believe his attacking style will naturally produce highlight-reel content, while the Bears’ media team are ready to push his profile aggressively on social channels.

Rees-Zammit burst onto the scene with Gloucester in the 2018/19 season, quickly establishing himself as one of the most dangerous finishers in the Premiership.

In 77 appearances for the Cherry and Whites, he crossed for 42 tries before becoming a fixture in the Wales set-up, scoring 14 tries in 32 Test caps.

His electric pace and instinctive attacking flair also earned him a call-up to the 2021 Lions tour.

Rees-Zammit’s immediate switch to Bristol means he will be available for the start of the domestic season and puts him back in contention for a place in Wales squad ahead of the Autumn Nations Series in November.

Bristol’s director of rugby, Pat Lam, said the signing was a statement of the club’s ambitions.

“Louis is a world-class player, and we’re thrilled to welcome him back to rugby union and to the Bears this season.

“Although we have a small squad, we’ve been building quality depth and experience across the team, bringing in players who can cover multiple positions to help us take that next step in the Prem and in Europe.

“Louis offers exactly that to our dynamic back three, with his ability and desire to play both full back and wing for the Bears.

“He has the drive and ambition to be one of the best back-three players in the world, and his goals align perfectly with our ambitions as a club.

“At just 24 years old, we know the athlete and competitor he is. The way we play and the way he wants to play fit seamlessly together, and we’re looking forward to working with him when he joins the group tomorrow.”**

The Bears kick off their season at home to Sale Sharks in the Premiership Rugby Cup on September 13.

For Lam and the Ashton Gate faithful, the arrival of a player who thrives on lifting crowds could be just the spark to set their campaign alight.
