Bookies Tip Gloucester for Louis Rees-Zammit’s Rugby Return — But French Clubs Lurk

Former Wales wing Louis Rees-Zammit says he has had “unbelievable” interest from clubs following his decision to return to rugby union - but where next?

Louis Rees-Zammit is being tipped to return to Gloucester rather head to France to resume his rugby union career.

The bookmakers have Kingsholm as the most likely destination for the former Wales wing now that he has decided to give up on his NFL dream.

Other clubs in the English Premiership are viewed as the Cardiff-born speedster’s next most likely move, ahead of re-locating in the Top 14.

The least likely option, say the bookies, is for Rees-Zammit to pick up the threads of his rugby life in the Welsh domestic game with one of the current four regions.

Gloucester, who nurtured Rees-Zammit from academy prospect to international sensation, are currently 2/1 favourites to bring him back to the West Country.

That’s the same price being offered for any other English club, suggesting that while the Cherry and Whites are logical front-runners, there’s strong competition brewing in the Premiership.

Given his proven pedigree in England’s top tier, it’s no surprise multiple Premiership sides are thought to be circling.

Gloucester, though, have both emotional and strategic reasons to fight for his signature — especially after an ultimately disappointing 2024–25 campaign that left fans missing Rees-Zammit’s finishing power.

Close behind in the odds are any French club at 5/2.

With the financial clout of the Top 14 and the appeal of a fresh environment, France represents a serious threat to English and Welsh sides.

Rees-Zammit has previously been linked with Montpellier and Bordeaux, whilst clubs like Toulon and Racing, known for recruiting high-profile backs, could easily be in the conversation — especially with Rees-Zammit’s marketability and international flair.

Cardiff Rugby — who would benefit from Rees-Zammit’s return in terms of both playing ability and box-office appeal — sit further back at 10/1.

Though still a realistic option, they face hurdles, not least financial limitations and the ongoing uncertainty within Welsh regional rugby.

Japanese clubs are also given an outside shot at 12/1.

While the Japan Rugby League One is increasingly attractive for international stars, Rees-Zammit appears focused on returning to elite-level competition rather than a short-term payday.

Longer odds go to the remaining Welsh regions: Scarlets and Ospreys are priced at 25/1, while Dragons trail the field at 33/1.

While his club future remains uncertain, Welsh bookmakers DragonBet are nearly unanimous on Rees-Zammit’s international prospects.

He’s priced at 1/5 to start for Wales in the 2025 Autumn Internationals — a strong indication that new head coach Steve Tandy will waste no time reintegrating him into the national fold.
