Hugh Morris, Gareth Bale and Brynmor Williams were Welsh sports stars given awards in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Glamorgan chief executive Morris was awarded an MBE for services to cricket and charity, while Wales captain Bale had the same honour for services to football and charity. Williams, a former Wales and Lions scrum-half, was also recognised for his charity work as well as achievements in rugby.
Welsh golfers made it a clean sweep of the major prizes in a strong field at the Welsh Open Youths (Mixed) at Porthmadog. Alex James, Royal Lytham and St Anne’s, won the event as part of an all-Welsh top three, while Wales international Izzy Hopkins, Bristol and Clifton, finished as the top female.

Welsh world champion Lily Rice has switched sports and will make her Commonwealth Games debut in para swimming in Birmingham later this year. Rice – the 18-year-old renowned for her wheelchair backflips – is already a world champion in women’s wheelchair motorcross. But now she is poised to represent Wales in para swimming as part of a four-athlete squad who will compete at the Games in July.
Students and young people in Wales have had a taste of triathlon and the hope is it’s a flavour to their liking. The event was a recent Go-Tri duathlon within broader activity at Pembrey Country Park that also included a competitive duathlon for more regular runners and cyclists. Organised by ColegauCymru/Colleges Wales – a partner to Sport Wales – the day was aimed at all abilities and involved both students and staff.
Matt Edwards stormed to another sensational win on the Plains Rally – setting the fastest time on all 10 stages in his Fiat Abarth 131 to win the ‘National’ 2WD section of the Bala-based event by exactly a minute. The result puts the three-time British rally champion second overall in both the Pirelli Ravenol Welsh and British Historic rally championships – not to mention the class lead in the highly competitive Restruct Welsh Historic category. “It has been really nice to have that sort of run in the car,” said Edwards.
Gemma Frizelle bagged herself two medals at the 2022 Rhythmic British Championships in Telford over the weekend as she continues to build towards this summer’s Commonwealth Games. The 24-year-old, who is bidding to secure herself a Team Wales spot for a second successive Games, qualified for three of the four senior individual apparatus finals and medalled in two of those. She scored 26.750 with hoop to scoop silver and 25.800 with ball to bag bronze.
Elfyn Evans scored more FIA World Rally Championship points by finishing second on Rally Portugal – his first podium finish of the season – than he had done in the first three rallies of 2022 combined. Jeremiah Azu has set his sights on returning to Birmingham’s newly refurbished Alexander Stadium in August to break the Welsh 100m record at the Commonwealth Games.
