World Ranked Peter Creed And Joel Makin Resume Rivalry In Welsh Squash Championships

Welsh rivals Peter Creed and Joel Makin are set for a national squash title clash in Cardiff this weekend.

The World-ranked players are top seeds for the Welsh Closed Championships at the Sport Wales National Centre, Sophia Gardens.

Makin, ranked at number 55 in the World, won the title last year when Creed was ruled out by injury, while the rivals clashed in the final at the 2015 championships.

Rhiwbina Squash Club’s Creed was crowned champion after Makin lost his cool and his way in the final. Makin has made outstanding progress since then and is sure to stay focused this time.

Now they are seeded to met again in Sunday’s A final and it’s certain to be a hard fought clash.

More than 100 elite players have entered the Welsh Closed and their are eight categories – men’s A, B, C, D, E and F events plus ladies A and B.

The championships start tonight (Friday) and continue through the weekend.

First seed Makin has been drawn against Chris Adrian in the first round, while Creed takes on Chris Lovett.

In other early matches Emyr Evans plays Jordan Williams and David Haley faces Richard Tailby.

Elliot Morris-Devred and George Thomas clash and the first round also includes Liam Eason v Ian Fenner-Evans, Dan Bergin v Dan Christopher, Sam Fenwick v Jayden Gough.

Cardiff-born Tesni Evans, who won the ladies title last year, is number 20 in the World rankings and starts her defence against Sarah Clode.

Second seed Deon Saffrey, from Barry, is among the World’s top 50 players and starts her campaign against Bronte Wright.

Hannah Davies plays Angharad Llewellyn, while Lowri Roberts awaits the winner of Zoe Edwards and Katie Jones in their qualifier.

The ladies A first round matches are completed by Nia Davies against Rebecca Baker, Ali Hemmingway v Megan Thomas, Abby Hicks  v Eleanor Jones and Gemma Davies against Ciara Richards.

Play starts tonight in the championships and continues through Saturday and Sunday on courts at the Sport Wales National Centre.
