Welsh Trio Named In GB Team For European U20 Championships

Jeremiah Azu, James Tomlinson and Sarah Omoregie have been named in Britain’s team the European Under20 Championships in Sweden.

The Welsh trio are among the first wave of selections for the championships in Boras from July 18-21.

All three have set new personal bests in their respective disciplines this season to book their ticket to Sweden.

Azu will be one of the favourites for gold as he leads the European under20 rankings this year.

The Cardiff AC sprint sensation clocked 10.27 secs when winning the Loughborough International in May.

Jeremiah Azu has been in blistering form all year.

That took the Helen james coached runner to third on the all-time Welsh rankings for the distance.

Azu – like Tomlinson and Omoregie – was assured of selection after winning the U20 title in Bedford last weekend despite easing up in the final few metres.

He later withdrew from Sunday’s 200m rather than risk a hamstring injury.

Tomlinson produced a new best of 60.24m for the discus at the Halle International throws meeting.

The Pembrokeshire ace won the U20 title in Bedford with a distance of 56.93m to join Azu on the plane.

Cardiff’s Omoregie won the shot in Bedford with an effort of  15.41m just four cms down on the PB she set in Halle earlier in the month.

Team Leader Trevor Painter said: commented: “I am delighted that we are able to name such a strong team from our first round of selections for the European Under-20 Championships in Borås, next month.

“The standard of competition in Bedford at the trials was incredibly high and because of this, it means that the team named at this point is a strong reflection of the calibre of junior athletes we have to pick from.”

The next trial events will take place on Saturday, 28th June in Watford, with the men’s and women’s 3000m. The team will be announced in full on Tuesday, 9 July.
