Welsh Open Strokeplay Postponed To August In Bid To Boost International Appeal

Wales Golf has postponed the 2021 Welsh Open Strokeplay at Machynys near Llanelli until August, when it is hoped the event will be able to host a national and international entry.

With the COVID-19 restriction timelines currently in place around the UK and Europe, it was felt the original dates in the middle of May would be too early to host the usual quality of event.

The Machynys Peninsula club has continued to support the event in a flexible way and the new dates will be August 11-13.

Wales Golf Championships Manager David Wilson said, “With the restrictions continuing to be eased gradually around the UK and Europe, it was felt the middle of May would be too early to host this top level event.

“Unfortunately, the new dates clash with qualifying for the England Golf Brabazon Trophy, but we have confirmed with England Golf that three places will be available in the finals for the top three finishers not already exempt.

“For obvious reasons we believe we will be able to run a better championship for everyone involved later in the summer, hoping for the usual standard of entry.

“Wales Golf is very grateful to Machynys Peninsula for kindly agreeing to postpone the championship until later in the summer and for their ongoing support of elite level amateur golf.

“We hope to see many of the best golfers in Europe playing in Machynys in August.”
