Charlotte Carey claimed another scalp as she topped her group at the Spain Masters in Madrid.

The 24-year-old beat Spain’s world No 125 Sofia-Xuan Zhang 3-1 to make it a hat-trick of wins.

Carey came out on top 11-8, 5-11, 11-5, 11-9 in the event against an opponent who had won her first two matches.

The Ebbw Vale-born player beat Spain’s world-ranked No 73 Maria Xiao 3-0 on Tuesday.

Carey, ranked 152 on the ITTF lists, has also triumphed 3-1 over Spain’s junior champion Ainhoa Cristobal earlier on Wednesday.

Six-time national champ Carey is obviously relishing in her recent move to Spain having won the Vic International last month.

That was her first tournament after the long lay-off caused by the suspension of table tennis due to COVID-19.

Carey will be in action in the semi-final on Thursday.
