- Wales’ Top Squash Duo Lose Out In Pyramid Scheme
Joel Makin and Tesni Evans are both out of the Egyptian Open in Cairo.
The duo made second-round exits – both had byes in the first round – on Sunday in the tournament played in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Makin, the world No 9, lost 3-2 in a 73minute battle with England’s James Willstrop.
The 25-year-old from Haverfordwest lost 11-9, 10-12, 9-11, 11-5, 6-11.
Makin had reached the semi-finals of the PSA World Tour finals in Cairo last month.
Joel Makin bowed out at the hands of England’s James Willstrop.But his stay will not be as long this time after losing to the four-time British champ from Harrogate who is now ranked 20 in the world.
Evans, also ranked No 9 in the women’s world list, was beaten in straight games by Belgium’s Tinne Gillis.
The 27-year-old was beaten 11-9, 11-5, 11-8 in 30 minutes by the world ranked No 18.
Evans is competing in only her second tournament after eight months on the sidelines following an ankle injury then when squash was suspended due to COVID-19.
