Wales’ British Champ Jess Heading For Women’s Tour De Yorkshire

Jess Roberts will wear the colours of British champion when she lines-up at the Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race on May 3-4. The Carmarthen-born cyclist has been named in Britain’s women’s team for the two stage event which is held alongside the Men’s Tour de Yorkshire which runs from May 2-5.

The Carmarthen-born cyclist has been named in Britain’s women’s team for the two stage event which is held alongside the Men’s Tour de Yorkshire which runs from May 2-5.

Roberts produced a thrilling late attack and then held off her rivals at they attacked in the closing metres to win the British National Road Race title in Northumberland last year from fellow Welsh rider Dani Rowe, now retired.

The 20-year-old has just competed in the six-stage Healthy Ageing Tour in Holland where she finished an excellent eighth on the opening stage.

Roberts went on to take 14th place overall as well as finish third in the Youth Classification.

The Welsh prospect will be joined by fellow senior British academy riders Rhona Callander and Anna Docherty plus guest riders Dani Christmas, Lauren Dolan and Nikki Juniper in the Women’s team.

British Cycling Performance Director Stephen Park said: “The Tour de Yorkshire and the Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race are both important races on our endurance squads’ calendars as it allows our senior academy riders to race alongside and against the world’s best which is essential for their development.
