Wales clinched a series win over France despite losing the final game 3-0 in Cardiff on Sunday.

Head Coach Kevin Johnson’s side had won the opening two games 2-1 and 3-1 at the National Hockey Centre at Sophia Gardens.

Sian French took over the captaincy to mark her 100th appearance – the third Welsh player in successive games to reach the century mark.

Phoebe Richards had joined the 100 Club in Friday’s game with Jo Westwood adding her name to the list on Saturday.

But hopes of a whitewash of a young French squad were dashed as the visitors struck through Guusje van Bolhuis, Delfinia Gaspari.

Wales pulled keeper Rose Thomas in the closing minutes to give them an extra outfield player but van Bolhuis sealed the win with her second goal.

The series win avenges the 2-1 series defeat in France in March when Wales lost the opening two games before hammering their opponents in the final game.

Johnson’s squad will soon head to Valencia for the FIH Open Series before August’s EuroHockey Championships in Glasgow.
