Chloe Tutton capped her brilliant breakthrough year with a bronze medal, British record and Welsh record at the World Short Course Championships.

The City of Cardiff swimmer led all the way in the 200m breaststroke final in Windsor but was just out-reached in a very tight finish.

Tutton’s time of two minutes 18.83 secs was a new Welsh record breaking the mark of 2:18.89 she had set in the heats when qualifying fastest.

That had taken six seconds off her personal best in the 25m pool by Tutton who finished fourth in the 200m breaststroke in Rio.

Fellow Brit Molly Renshaw took gold in 2:18.51 by just 0.01 secs from Canada’s Kelsey Wog.

It is Tutton’s second major medal after her bronze in the 100m breaststroke at the European Championships in London in May.

The British record of 2:18.44 is held by Renshaw.

Tutton, though, is the new British record holder in the 100m breaststroke – becoming the first woman to break the one minute five secs barrier.

The 20-year-old set broke the mark twice first clocking 1:05.20 in the semi-final.

Tutton then clocked 1:04.79 in the final for another record and 5th place overall in a tough event.

Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson took the gold medal in a time of 1:03.03.
