Shaun Marsh Joins Glamorgan’s Elite Band Of Aussies

Shaun Marsh scored a century on his Championship debut for Glamorgan on the second day of their Division Two clash against Gloucestershire at Bristol.

He joins fellow Australians Matthew Elliott and Mark Cosgrove in achieving that feat. Ten Glamorgan players have now scored a century on first-class debut, seven of them doing so in the Championship.

The Glamorgan opening pair of Jack Murphy and Nick Selman, resuming on 26-0 on the second morning, had survived the first hour unscathed. However, the latter was undone for 28 by a Ryan Higgins outswinger with the score on 57-1, bringing Marsh to the crease.

The score had moved on to 70-1 when rain brought the players off at 12.40pm, with an early lunch taken.

When play eventually resumed at 2pm, Marsh looked to kick Glamorgan on early in the second session. Combined with Murphy, he saw the Welsh county past the 100 mark in just under 45 minutes after the interval.

Gloucestershire got their breakthrough when Graeme van Buuren struck, dismissing Murphy leg before wicket for 47 with Glamorgan 124-2. But Marsh carried on, reaching his maiden Championship half-century for Glamorgan from 98 balls.

A flurry of Marsh boundaries late in the session took the batsman to 79 not out, and his side to 194-2, trailing by 42 in the first innings at tea. Kiran Carlson was unbeaten on 28.

Carlson and Marsh continued to dominate the Gloucestershire bowlers into the final session of the day, and they had built a partnership of 111 when Carlson was caught behind off Benny Howell for 45 with the score on 235.

Marsh pressed on and brought up a maiden Championship debut for Glamorgan from 171 balls, but soon departed for 111, caught by Ryan Higgins as he pulled van Buuren toward the boundary, his team on 263-4.

New vice-captain Chris Cooke and Aneurin Donald had added 24 when the latter was caught behind off Higgins for 27 in the closing stages of the day. Cooke and David Lloyd guided Glamorgan through to the close, ending on 296-5, a lead of 60.
