Rhiwbina’s Peter Creed Is Welsh Squash Champion For Seventh Time

Peter Creed, who plays out of Rhiwbina SRC in Cardiff, is men’s squash champion of Wales for a seventh time.

Caerphilly-born Creed, 29, defeated World number 50 Joel Makin, from Pembrokeshire, in the final.

Holder Makin won the title for the first time a year ago, but Creed came storming back to be crowned champion again.

The 22-year-old Makin fought hard, but Creed emerged the winner 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 11-7 at the Wales National Sports Centre in Cardiff.

The Welsh rivals, who are preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Australia during 2018, join forces on Tuesday evening when they are play at one and two in the University of Birmingham Lions team against Bristol away in the British Premier League.

Makin, who plays out of West Warwicks SRC, is at one for Lions because he has the higher World ranking

In the ladies A event, Cardiff-born Tesni Evans, ranked number 20 in the World, won the title for a fifth time.

Evans, 24, emerged the winner in all four of her matches three games to love to take the Welsh title again.

Jayden Gough worked hard to win the Welsh Closed men’s B title.

He recovered from two games down to beat George Thomas 9-11, 6-11, 11-1, 12-10, 11-6 in his semi-final before defeating Dan Christopher 12-10, 13-15, 11-8, 5-11, 11-3 in the final.

Rhondda’s Lee Papworth also battled through two five-set matches to enjoy success.

Papworth won the men’s F title, beating Tony Baird 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-2, 11-3 in the semi-final and Craig Bluck 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7.
