Record Entry For Welsh Open Seniors Championship At Pennard

More than 150 top level senior players will tee it up in the Welsh Open Seniors Championship at Pennard this month, a record for the event. Last year’s winner Ian Crowther returns to defend the title he won at Maesdu and is joined by Newport’s Andrew Williams along with USA based Michael Mercier, winners in 2016 and 2015 respectively.

More than 150 top level senior players will tee it up in the Welsh Open Seniors Championship at Pennard this month, a record for the event.

Last year’s winner Ian Crowther returns to defend the title he won at Maesdu and is joined by Newport’s Andrew Williams along with USA based Michael Mercier, winners in 2016 and 2015 respectively.

Ashton Bradbury, Chairman of Wales Golf’s Championships Committee said, “We are delighted with the strength of the entry to this year’s Welsh Open Seniors.

“This is an important event in our annual calendar and it is great to see it supported by so many top level senior players with a total of 156 entries.”

The field includes a host of Welsh Seniors Internationals including Colin Jones, Jeffrey Thomas and Nigel Evans, in addition to Williams who currently lies top of the Welsh Seniors Order of Merit.

Newly crowned Welsh Seniors closed champion Jones is going for the domestic double.

“I am looking forward to it,” he said. “I have never played Pennard before, but a lot of the players speak very favourably about it and I have heard it is very beautiful.”

England provide their usual strong entry with the three players currently at the top of the 2018 England Seniors’ Order of Merit, Trevor Foster, Steve Graham and Ian Attoe all present at Pennard.

Accrington’s Trevor Foster will be hoping to add the Welsh title to his recent victory in the Irish Open Seniors’ Championship.

Pennard manager Rhys Morgan said, “We are very much looking forward to hosting this championship. The course is in great condition, I am sure that the players will enjoy playing it and will soon appreciate why it is known as ‘The Links in the Sky’.”

The entire field will play 36 holes over the first two days (27^th/28^th June) before being cut to the top 60 and ties for the last round to take place on Friday 29^th June. The leaders are expected to start their final round at around 1pm.

Visitors are welcome to watch some of the best senior players in Britain compete for the Welsh Open Seniors title.
