Power Powers To Victory On Season Debut

Mid Wales racing driver Ben Power was a winner at his first meeting of the season – talking the Guttercrest Legends Car to victory at Anglesey.

Power, from Guilsfield, near Newtown, finished third in the National Legends Car championship last season, but has cut back his racing commitments for 2016.

The two-day North Wales event was his first of the season, and the team only decided to enter a week before.

On day one, he won the final race and was placed third overall for the day. On the second day, he scored a win and two second places to finish the overall winner.

He also clocked the fastest lap of the weekend.

The 26-year-old said: “We’ve had to cut back on the racing this year because of work.

“We made a late decision to take part in this meeting, and I’m glad we did!

“The car hadn’t been touched or driven since the last race in November.

“We’ll aim to do a few more races later in the season, and may try some other championships too.”

Power made his debut in the Legends Car series in 2009 – finishing 8th overall and 2nd in the rookie table, having switched to the circuits after winning the Junior Rallycross crown in 2006 and Supermodifed Rallycross titles in 2007 and 2008.

His progress in Legends racing has seen him climb from a 10th place finish in the 2010 championship to 6th in 2011, 4th in 2012, 3rd in 2013, 2nd in 2014, and 3rd in 2015.

The formula originated on the US oval tracks, and the cars have an American look, being 5/8-scale replicas of classic US models.

Guttercrest Racing runs a Ford Coupe 1934 replica, with a 1250cc Yamaha motorcycle engine.

With identical cars and the fastest drivers having to start at the back of the grid, there is said to be more overtaking in a single Legends race than in a whole season of Formula 1.
