The Welsh rallying season starts in earnest this weekend, with Richard Merriman the man to beat.

The opening round of the 2025 JD Tyres Welsh Tarmacadam Rally Championship takes place this Sunday (30 March) when Pembrey Circuit hosts the Kath Curzon Memorial Rally.

Organised by Port Talbot Motor Club, the event will raise funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity – following the sudden and untimely passing of double Welsh Tarmacadam co-driving champion Kath Curzon last year.

Richard Merriman, the five-time and defending Welsh Tarmacadam drivers’ champion, who Curzon used to navigate for, is one of seven Darrian drivers on the starting list – as the new event attracts a capacity entry.

The Pontypridd driver will be aiming for a class win in his rapid two-wheel drive two-litre Vauxhall-engined Darrian T90.

Other notable drivers taking part include Phil Turner (Fiesta R5), John Morgan (Escort RS1800), Rob Tout (Fiesta R5), Nigel Gibbard (Darrian T9 GTR), Ian Taylor (Mitsubishi Evo 9), Endaf Owens (Escort Mk1), Russell Davies (Vauxhall Astra F2), and Paul Fowden in his ex-Petter Solberg Subaru Impreza WRC S11.

Seeded at car number one will be Matthew and Maddie Curzon – Kath’s son and granddaughter – in an Escort.

The event will feature six special stages covering 43 stage miles.

Spectators can buy tickets in advance from the Pembrey Circuit website or on the gate on the day.
