Peak Practice For Andy With Second In Switzerland

Welsh marathon ace Andrew Davies finished second in the demanding Jungfrau Marathon in Switzerland.

No ordinary marathon, the race begins in Interlaken and ends in the shadow of the three great Swiss peaks, the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, with the runners having to climb 1,829 metres from start to finish.

Borden flier Davies completed the course in 3:01.37 to come home behind the winner, fellow Brit Robbie Simpson, in 2:56.31. Ethiopia’s Birhanu Mekonnen was third in 3:03.48.

 

A mountain running specialist, Davies had earlier this year won the Salomon Trail Marathon in north Wales and is a regular international on the World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge circuit.

The 38-year-old PE teacher finished 11th at the Gold Coast in 2:26:05 and has a best marathon time of 2:15.11 in London last year.

That time earned him his ticket to the Commonwealth Games and also got him a run for Britain in the World Championships in London in 2017.
