Olympic Rower Vicky Thornley Vows To Ride Again . . . At Home

Vicky Thornley has vowed to keep fit on her static bike at home after the road crash in which she suffered a broken elbow.

The Welsh rower was hurt in an accident while out cycling last week and needed surgery on her right arm.

Thornley, who is preparing for her third Olympic Games appearance in next year’s postponed event, was out on her bike near Reading with partner and fellow Olympic medallist Richard Egington when she hit the tarmac.

The Olympic silver medallist from Rio four years ago has paid thanks to her surgeon and insisted she will soon be able to resume exercise at home.

She said on Twitter, “Special thanks to @myelbowdo for putting my elbow back together so I will be pulling on that ergo handle in no time. But until then the Watt bike will keep me fit.

“@Ricegington – thanks for being by my side and actually being quite a good nurse.

“As much as this isn’t ideal, it could have been a lot worse,” said Thornley’s online post.

“Had my elbow fixed by the best, so I will be pulling on that ergo handle in no time.

“Last thing to say is stay safe on your bikes, think I should stick to boats.”

Thornley last summer became the first British female single sculler in 20 years to qualify for the Olympics and also won the British Trials in Caversham earlier this year before the Olympics in Japan was postponed.

The 32-year-old from Wrexham won silver in the double sculls at Rio 2016 alongside Katherine Grainger.
