Morse Cracks It As He Regains British Discus Title

Brett Morse regained his British Championship discus title – then set his sights on European Championships qualifying.

The Cardiff AAC thrower claimed his fourth national crown with a winning throw of 58.90metres at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

More’s winning throw with his fifth round effort was below the qualifying mark for the Europeans in Berlin of 63.50m.

But Morse – whose best this season is 61.71m is confident of getting the mark having also qualified for the World Cup in London in two weeks time.

The 29-year-old said: “I’ve done the distance in training and I’m confident competing in London will get me fired up to get the qualifying mark.

“One of my main reasons for not training full-time last year was because I was working full-time and I wasn’t throwing as far, which means I wasn’t getting picked for these big events.

“For me, I do athletics to compete at the big events, in full stadiums, get people clapping and enjoying the event.

“And since this has been announced about the World Cup I have been pretty excited to compete in that stadium again and really show what I can do.”

Morse admitted not being selected for Wales for April’s Commonwealth Games provided the kick he needed to get his athletics career back on track.

And now he wants to carry on and target getting to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“It was a bit of a kick not going to Australia,” said Morse, who will be back in action for Cardiff at the British League next weekend before lining up for Britain at the World Cup.

“The last few years I haven’t been taking athletics that seriously because of work commitments and stuff were taking more of a priority.

“This year I am lucky enough to be in a different line of work, which means I can train basically full-time, and I have decided I am going to try to get to the 2020 Olympics, which would be my second Olympics.

This was the first step in doing that. I have thrown further than I have for two years and I have become British champion again.

“So I am very happy and it is a step on the road to Tokyo.”

Shaftesbury’s Greg Thompson was second with a throw of 58.10 with clubmate Nicholas Percy third with 57.26m
