Merthyr Town FC Pay Off Tax Bill Plus Interest

Merthyr Town have settled the tax bill which was a significant part of their financial problems.

The Martyr have battled on and say they are ‘overwhelmed’ by the donations received from various fundraising activities.

Cardiff City, Swansea City, Newport County and Hereford FC have all played their part in raising funds.

A club statement said: “The Just Giving campaign to raise funds to pay amounts owed to HM Revenue and Customs has been completed with all of the proceeds released to the club, minus Just Giving receiving 5% commission of the total raised.

“The fundraising page was set up in the aftermath of the club’s defeat 13-1 at Chesham with a £2,500 target, when at that point the extent of the amount owed was not known.

“Following a public meeting the target was adjusted to £25,000.”

Merthyr Town’s interim chairman Paul Donovan said: “The club have been overwhelmed by the donations received from everybody.

“We have now settled the amount owed to HMRC including interest. The remaining money will be ring-fenced to go towards future tax owed.

“I would like to personally thank the Dial M for Merthyr boys for all of their fundraising activities, along with others who have raised money, and of course the donors for their support and generosity.”

Merthyr is a community owned club and the owners will be updated regarding the financial situation of the club with other debts still owed.

Merthyr manager Gavin Williams takes his team to Frome Town on Saturday, while the next Southern League home match is against bottom club Dunstable Town on Saturday, January 6.

More than 2,600 spectators attended the Martyrs’ goalless draw against promotion-chasing Hereford FC

The injured Jaye Bowen was replaced by youth player Harrison Lewis during the match.

Hereford’s squad included five ex-Marthyrs, while former Merthyr boss Steve Jenkins is their assistant manager.

Monday, January 1 v Frome Town (away)

Saturday, January 6 v Dunstable Town (home)

Normal admission at the Loadlok Community Stadium: Adult £10; Concessions £8 (Over 65’s, Cardiff City, Swansea City, Newport County season ticket holders); Merthyr RFC season ticket holders £5; Under 16 £1.

The Martyrs have half season tickets now on sale. They are priced at (£87.50 for adults, £75 seniors).

A half season ticket entitles fans to a match ticket to the Hereford match.
