Megan’s Delight As She Strikes Silver With Jess To Complete Minsk Medal Mission

Megan Barker said it was job well done as she struck silver with fellow Welsh rider Jess Roberts at the European Games. Megan Barker said it was job well done as she struck silver with fellow Welsh rider Jess Roberts at the European Games.

Barker, younger sister of Olympic and world champ Elinor, and Carmarthen’s Roberts, the 2018 British Road Race champ, joined forces with Jenny Holl and Josie Knight in the team pursuit.

The quarter clocked the fastest time in the first round with a time of 4.21.023 to seal their spot in the final where they finished three seconds slower than the more-experienced Italian squad to grab silver.

“We’re really happy, we came here wanting a medal and were really happy to get into the gold ride-off,” said the 21-year-old from Cardiff.

“It was a lot closer than we thought it would’ve been. It, of course, would’ve been nice to win but we can’t be disappointed.

“We’re a very young team so for us it’s been an amazing experience and opportunity to set a good time and race at a really big event.

“We’ve been going out fast every round and just about holding on. I think to be that close to the senior Italian team we can be pretty happy. The level of competition has been high.”

Wales’ British champ Jess Roberts sprints past Kirsten Wild to take a stage win in Brittany this year.

Roberts, 20, has been in superb form on the roads this year but competing in Minsk meant she was unable to defend her national RR crown.

“We were coming here to podium, we have gone faster than we thought we would, so we are really pleased,” said Roberts.

“We’ve got under-23 European Championships in a week so we are using this as an event to get ready for that. It’s a great experience to be in the Village with all the athletes.”
